Movie Reviews of CabaretMovie Review: The end of the modern musical Summary: 5 Stars
I believe one needs to see "Cabaret" in the history of musicals, especially film musicals. "Cabaret" was the ne plus ultra of the modern musical: it explored territory that wasn't normally the subject of musicals, and did so with a sophistication that transcended the genre. It's a musical with no happy endings, because we know--as the characters do not--what is coming next. There is no escape in Cabaret, which, given the almost-inherently escapist nature of musicals, is a genre-bending turn that hasn't been equaled. Later musicals are either post-modern (the great Moulin Rouge) or ironic and vaguely silly (Chicago). After Cabaret there was nothing left to do.
Movie Review: Cabaret Summary: 5 Stars
Fosse's groundbreaking "Cabaret," a Broadway musical-turned-showstopping film event, was itself based on a novel by Christopher Isherwood. While the film considers Germany's dark, historic slide from Weimar decadence into fascism from an intriguing angle, it's the effusive, stylishly choreographed song-sequences that elevate the film to classic status. Minnelli was never better as the brash, electrifying Sally, especially belting out "Money" or the Dietrich-like "Tomorrow Belongs to Me." And who can forget Joel Grey, the Kit Kat's eccentric, ghastly master of ceremonies? Winner of eight Oscars, "Cabaret" is a flamboyant knockout.
Movie Review: where is the blu-ray special edition Summary: 5 Stars
This is a perfect example of why Amazon should give us the ability to give two ratings - one for the movie itself and a second for the quality of the dvd. In this case we have a 5 star movie and a 2 star dvd.
This is a great film. It has never had a decent home video release. Instead of giving us the third and fourth and fifth updated reissues of the same handful of classic films I wish the studios would pay a little more attention to great films like "Cabaret" which they have neglected.
Please, if anyone at Warners is paying attention, it is time for a blu-ray special edition of "Cabaret"
Movie Review: As revealing and amazing as always... Summary: 5 Stars
This movie is a one of a kind experience in that it is interesting, educational, entertaining, and exciting, something most movies try to accomplish and normally do not achieve. The quality of acting, singing, and directing, choreography, everything is top notch. Yes it is a departure from the equally entertaining stage version it is something that trancends film and gives you that theatrical feeling without being taken direct from broadway. The quick pacing that makes modern movie musicals great is evident and maybe orgiginated with Cabaret, one of the greatest musicals, and movies of all time.
Movie Review: All the world is still a stage Summary: 5 Stars
Although a musical, Cabaret is not silly or awkward as all but one of the songs takes place on the stage of the Cabaret, and the one exception is performed at a political rally (of sorts). Songs and story alike are brutally realistic as the facade of morality is stripped away to reveal how people really act when their needs are not being met. But this is not a gloomy movie. Rather, it is entertaining - and overtly seductive, being directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse, the master of sexual choreography.
