Movie Reviews of CHiPs: The Complete First SeasonMovie Review: One Of My Favourites... Summary: 5 Stars
This has to be one of my favourite shows from when I was a kid, and when I heard about this coming to DVD I was excited. I bought this and The Fall Guy in the same week, and I have to say that I was more impressed with this set than The Fall Guy, although I love both shows.
Warner Bros really does like to release things slowly, which frustrates me, but I am however glad that they decided to release this set. And what I find funny is that it wasn't even a Warner Bros show. If you watch the end credits of the show, the show was actually made by MGM. So I guess WB bought the rights for it, and released it.
I do want to comment on the packaging for this set, though. I like the actual packaging, it's in the standard Cardboard box that holds 3 of the slim cases, which hold 2 discs each. However, my concern is with the artwork itself. I prefer the A-Team and Macgyver type packaging, where even though it contains the same artwork on the covers of each slim case, they have all the episode listings on the back of the case. The artwork for this set I find is horrible. For 1, the cover art is the most boring shot of Ponch and Jon I could think of, it doesn't show them in action or anything close to it. But onto the actual inner cases, it has no artwork on the actual cases themselves, it just shows little tiny pictures from various episodes, and contains the episode titles, and summaries on both sides of the case. I find it very confusing, and distracting. It looks very sloppy. Often times I go and look at it, and I can't tell which side of it is which. All it has for you to tell the difference is a little badge with the number of the disc up in the corner. I think all the episode titles, and all that should be listed on the back of the case, and have artwork on the front. It makes it less confusing that way. That's my only complaint about the artwork, or set in general.
I know I'll die of old age waiting for some of my favourite shows to finally be released beyond their first seasons from Warner Bros (Everwood, Life Goes On, Night Court, etc) but with this set I was really impressed. I mean the picture and sound quality are a little bit questionable. I would say they really need to remix the sound because when I watch it, the music parts that play are super loud, but the dialogue is kind of low. I turn it up real loud on my surround system to hear the dialogue and then I blow people out of the room when a chase scene comes up because the music and sound effects are too loud.
As for the picture quality though, you still see some crackle and dust in the picture, so I hope they go back and remaster it one day. But other than that this is a great set. This is one of those shows that doesn't get old. I watch these episodes over and over again, and don't get sick of them.
I heard that Warner Bros is going to release season 2 next June, which will be around a year from the time that this was released, but I definitely recommend this set to anyone who is a fan of good storytelling, who likes a good laugh, and likes a lot of realism. This show has it all. Most episodes will keep you on the edge of your seat, from scenarios like trying to save a parachuter who is trapped on an overpass, to snakes in cars, to saving a mother and daughter who's car went over a bank, and is about to fall off a cliff.
I give this show a 5 star rating because it has a lot of replay value, which most shows don't have. You can watch it over and over again. And is a good show for all ages, not just adults. I watched it when I was around 10, and my dad did when he was in his 30's, so that says a lot about the demographic that this show appeals to.
