Movie Reviews of CHET BAKER LIVE AT RONNIE SCOTT'S

Movie Review: Portrait of a Dead Man
Summary: 3 Stars

Great show???!!! Are you kidding? The great, and I mean GREAT Chet Baker looks like he is ready to be embalmed. It may be an important look at the man is his final phase, but you can hardly call it entertainment. The voice is gone, the incredible tone that no other trumpet player could imitate, is gone. Yes the technique is still there in the fingering and musicianship, and the piano and bass are about as good as you can get. No one with even half of Baker's talent could sound bad in front of them. BUT COME ON....you are watching one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time in the throes of death from addiction. And the interviews by Elvis Costello make it crystal clear that this is a completely lost soul. Listen to even one album, one track even, from his recordings from the sixties, and you will find this too painful to watch. If you love Chet's music, as I do, you will probably want to see this, but it isn't pretty to watch.

Three additional notes: "Love for Sale" which comes around halfway through is pretty great, and you almost hear the old Chet. Van Morrison's rendition, lyrics in hand, of "Send in the Clowns" is absolutely pathetic. When he sings the final line, "Don't bother, they're here," truer words were never sung or spoken. I don't mean to be jingoistic, but I think only an English audience would have tolerated this without throwing something. Costello's vocals at the end of the show, especially "The Very Thought of You," are fine, but they remind me of what we are missing in Baker's incredible recordings of these songs
