Movie Reviews of C.H.U.D.

Movie Review: An "A" of a "B" movie
Summary: 4 Stars

I first saw this film as a child and it scared the hell out of me. Years later, I picked it up on DVD and it is still just as good. Though the director and actors could have taken this project less-than-serously, they play it straight and I thank them for that. It portays some homeless people get mutated by toxic waste being stored under the New York City in the labyrinth of sewer tunnels under the city. It sounds cheesy, but its not since the film is played very seriously and straight. The film has a great atmosphere with the dark dingy tunnels of the sewers. What a great place to set a monster movie! I mean in reality there are miles of old tunnels under the city. The film just fells dingy and you can almost smell the stale stench. The monsters themselves look very good, espcecially for the budget this movie had. They just don't make movies like this anymore. One complaint I have about the DVD is the commentary. I was really glad they got the entire leading actors to return for it, but I was upset that they spent most of the time bashing the film. A lot of people put some very hard work into this movie, and they just sit their bashing their work. I was not impressed. Its a decent movie that deserves to be looked at.

Movie Review: CHUD
Summary: 4 Stars

A nice traditional monster movie except that now the monsters are in the sewers. Douglas Cheek's C.H.U.D is a cult classic in my book. You know nowadays so many wannabee filmmakers try to do the same type of creature features but fail miserable. C.H.U.D has had staying power for it's atmosphere, tongue in cheek humor, politically incorrectness and it's story. This was the movie that had John Goodman, Jay Thomas in early roles. Christopher Curry and Daniel Stern were great as Bosch and Reverend.

Sure C.H.U.D is a low budget, at times silly monster movie but there a few hints of brilliance. I still goosebumps at our first glimpse of the C.H.U.D in their habitat. Cheek's directing attempts to make the movie serious while throwing couple random bizarre moments like the "shower scene" and coin swallowing scene.

You know this more of a traditional creature feature because we don't see many scenes with the C.H.U.D but when we do they are all keepers!!!

Recently to show that how beloved C.H.U.D is the TV Show Pushing Daisies mentioned the movie several times C.H.U.D will be one of the more creature features from 80s.

Movie Review: CHUD - New York watch out!
Summary: 4 Stars

C.H.U.D is a classic; one I almost ignored. I had doubts about whether or not it would be good but bought it anyway. I am happy that I did. It takes place in present day (well, for when it was made) New York, where something is killing off the homeless people. A man who runs a local soup-kitchen, along with a doubting police captain, figure out what it is that is killing everyone. Meanwhile a photographer, who recently moved to NY and is trying to get pictures of the homeless people for a newspaper article gets involved, and they try to stop the monsters. However, it appears that this goes higher into the government than any of them expected, and they are soon in over their heads.
The movie also has a clever social commentary, about how people try to forget about the homeless, and how people don't want to have anything to do with them. No one cares about the people being killed, until the "real people" die. At that point, it becomes a major military topic.
This is a movie that no one should go without seeing. It is well worth the price, and will not disappoint.

Movie Review: An 80's gem that is still plenty of fun today
Summary: 4 Stars

C.H.U.D. is one of those hard to find horror gems from the 80's that still remains fun to watch today. John Heard stars as a New York City photographer who, along with a cook (Daniel Stern) and a police captain (Christopher Curry), uncover that the homeless living in the sewers are being mutated into hideous, cannibalistic monsters thanks to the dumping of toxic waste underground. These "Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers" (hence the title of the film) soon start coming to the surface, and they're quite hungry too. Though C.H.U.D. is a bonafide B-movie creature feature, the crew makes the most out of the small budget with imaginitive creature and gore effects, great shots of New York City, and a cast that is surprisingly good to boot. Though it's happy ending detracts from the tone of the rest of the film, C.H.U.D. remains one of the best and most overlooked horror films to come out of the early 80's. Look for a young John Goodman as an unlucky cop in the diner.

Movie Review: Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers
Summary: 4 Stars

Daniel Stearn's performance in this film is without question his best to date, combine that with the brillant writing in the script and you have a true cult classic on your hands with this film!!

I love zombie films and that's why I love C.H.U.D.!! The C.H.U.D.s may radioactive mutants but they deliver the same end of world feel as Romero or Fulci's creations. They are in short an army of Argento type demons lurking below the streets of New York just waiting to spread their diease across the world.

In one of the best scenes of this film a group of N.R.C. scientists accompanied by three S.W.A.T. team members armed with flamethrowers and assualt rifles stumble upon a lone C.H.U.D. It makes its way through the team's flamethrowers and tears them all to sheds.

Even the X-files have paid homeage to this film with an episode entitled "The Host". If you haven't seen this one, you truly need to!!!!!
