Movie Reviews of Bye Bye Birdie

Movie Review: Upbeat musical satire.
Summary: 5 Stars

Bye Bye Birdie is a cheerful, energetic musical satire poking fun at show business and teenagers at the same time. Conrad Birdie (Jesse Pearson) is a superstar teen idol parody of Elvis Presley, who's just been drafted. Dick Van Dyke is a songwriter who wants to be a chemist. His girlfriend (Janet Leigh) pitches the idea to Ed Sullivan of having Birdie give one last kiss to one teeenage girl, to symbolize all his fans, before going off to the Army - and singing a song by her boyfriend on Sullivan's show. Ann-Margret is sensational as the lucky girl. Bobby Rydell is her faithully jealous young boyfriend, and they make a cute couple. Sullivan appears as himself, Maureen Stapleton plays Van Dyke's overbearing mother, and Paul Lynde is Ann-Margret's father. The comedy varies from trite slapstick to hilarious satire. There are several memorable musical numbers, most famously Dick Van Dyke's dance with an animated happy face, singing "Put On A Happy Face."

Movie Review: It's CORNY, it's CHEESY.........it's GREAT!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have loved Bye Bye Birdie since my childhood. Yeah, yeah, I know it's corny, predictable, sappy and cheesy. But I think THAT is what makes it great. The tunes are catchy, the cast & acting is great and above all Ann-Margret is a dream to watch. Just seeing her in the "Got a lot of Living.." number gives me goosebumps! I love this film and can watch it over and over, they just don't make'em like they used to. Watching Dick van Dyke is a laugh riot. he could really give it his all. And Paul Lynde is a scream. If one knows anything about Elvis Presley and his impact on Rock-n-Roll and more importantly his major impact on young girls of the 50's-you can appreciate the near hysteria he caused. I always whip this musical out when I have guests, and they all love it. Some haven't seen it before and some haven't seen it in many years. This musical is a class act, buy it now!

Movie Review: The Last Hooray
Summary: 5 Stars

This slapstick comedy is a must for all who enjoy 60's style of music. A cast of actors to portray the parts of middle America could not be improved. Imagine a movie being made today with the likes of Dick VanDyke, Ann Margret, Janet Leigh, and Paul Lynde to name a few. This "hokie" comedy returns us to a life- style that we today would all envy. Life is sweet in middle Ohio as Kim and Hugo are "going steady" until Kim wins a contest to be THE GIRL to send Rock Star Conrad Birdie off to the Army. "One Last Kiss" will be delivered on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in front of millions of viewers. Middle aged matrons swoon and require smelling salts as the comedy unfolds. My only disappointment is that in 40 years a remake has NOT been made of this classic.

Movie Review: We're going to be on Ed Sullivan."
Summary: 5 Stars

Ann-Margret shines in this adapted stage to screen version. She has a great voice, beautiful body and a damn good actress. I also saw her live years ago at Radio City Music Hall and she brought the house down....but i digress.Paul Lynde as Kim's father is priceless and it is so wonderful to have his performance perserved on film for all times. His wonderful sense of humor is one of a kind and he brings the fathers character to a new height.Dick Van Dyke and Janet Lee are as consistantly wonderful as always with their humor and singing ability.I found the sound to be excellent in 5.1 filling my living room with beautfiul sound from this musical comedy. You will not be disappointed if you buy this. It's a fun time..

Movie Review: Jesse Pearson was ABSOLUTELY PERFECT
Summary: 5 Stars

Portraying the Elvis-like pop singer Conrad Birdie, Jesse Pearson totally NAILED the role. His cocky smile, his stuff-eating grin, his you-gotta-be-sincere passion, his hearty singing, carried the day. Since he and Ann-Margaret barely appeared together in the film, each wholly dominated their every separate scene, and Jesse's screen power completely matched A-M's. And just look how great he was, in that ridiculous skin-tight gold suit (and absurd white cowboy boots!) with his slightly big belly -- nobody else on Earth could have played that part as well as (much less, better than) Jesse Pearson did.
