Movie Reviews of By Dawn's Early LightMovie Review: The unthinkable has happened. They look back thru their bomb scope, and the base is gone. Summary: 4 Stars
A B-52 bomber crew is scrambled into action. After the plane takes off there is a nuclear strike on their base. The unthinkable has happened. They look back thru their bomb scope, and the base is gone. One of the crewman can't believe it. He thinks the base is still there. His wife and children are - were - down there. He can't believe it and they can't convince him the base is gone. He refuses to take his position on the plane. He's consumed with grief. Inconsolable he ejects himself out the bomber without a parachute.
Meanwhile the presidents helicopter has crashed and he's been injured. It's only been a limited nuclear war so far and he's determined to stop the war from escalating, the only problem is, he's no longer in control of the military.
The bomber continues on it's way to Russia, minus one crewman. The flight is almost exactly like the flight of the bomber in the movie 'Dr Strangelove' - "It's just one bomber Demitri", "I don't know why it's so hard to find it", "They're trained for that Demitri". Except in this flight, the female pilot convinces the crew to turn around and not drop their bombs on Russia. It turns out their inaction keeps the war from escalating and the president is able to gain control of the military once again.
Movie Review: A classic for any collection ..... Summary: 4 Stars
I saw this quite impressive movie years ago on television and bought it to add to my movie collection mostly for nostalgia's sake. The main reason I enjoyed it years ago and continue to enjoy it is its casting of Powers Boothe as the quintessential military man doing his darnedest to follow orders.
I like Powers Boothe. I like every movie he appears in. Powers Boothe adds *presence* to movies. <g>
That said, for me this story revolves around Mr. Boothe's pilot character and his battle with an obstinate and very un-military-like female co-pilot. He wishes to follow orders and drop his bombs. She wimps out and argues against it. Somehow beyond my comprehension, the wimpy co-pilot convinces the pilot to disregard direct orders and turn around.
Despite this decision falling into line with the theme of the movie overall, I still find myself wishing the man had stuck to his guns against the childish ravings of the woman in the seat beside him. Tsk, tsk, tsk.
(I'm a woman, btw, for those of you reading this review who wish to attempt a grasp of my logic here!)
An excellent drama and one worth seeing ... even to pass on for the edification of younger generations! :-)
Movie Review: WHAT SO PROUDLY WE HAILED Summary: 4 Stars
Although the movie is fifteen years old now, its message is potently timely. BY DAWN'S EARLY LIGHT revolves around what happens when terrorists nuke a Russian city and make it look like the US did the deed. Retaliations ensue and the movie becomes a frightening chase to stop further annihilation. When it appears that President Martin Landau has been killed, he is replaced by warmonger Darren McGavin who is paired up with another hawk, Rip Torn. They decide the only way to WIN the war is to take out the leaders. A subplot involves lover pilots Powers Boothe and Rebecca DeMornay who are piloting the bomber set to do the dirty deed. The tense what if scenario is played out beautifully, with acting kudos to Landau, McGavin and Jeffrey DeMunn who plays a soldier who wants everything to stop, but is hogtied by McGavin and Torn. Along with FAIL SAFE and DR. STRANGELOVE, BY DAWN'S EARLY LIGHT is a hearty testimonial against nuclear weapons.
Movie Review: Not at all bad for a TV movie. Summary: 4 Stars
This movie is much like the cult 1964 movie "Fail Safe" (which I highly recommend). I found this movie enjoyable and fast-moving. The acting wasn't excellent, nor was the production, but for a made-for-TV movie, it's not bad. Not bad at all.
This by no means implies the plot, acting or directing are faulty. They're just not Oscar-class. All of the principals did excellent jobs. I found only one 'hole' in the script, but I'll leave this up to you to find. For you eye-candy folks, this movie is short on special effects, which I actually appreciated since it allowed me to focus on the story-line.
But, truth be told, I'm a big fan of Darren McGavin and James Earl Jones, and I'll watch anything they're part of and enjoy almost all of it.
If you like cold-war drama, you'll enjoy this one.
Movie Review: Excellent cold-war thriller Summary: 4 Stars
This was a made-for-TV movie that was unusually good, with an awesome cast. Powers Boothe and Rebecca De Mornay star as the pilot and co-pilot of a nuclear-armed B-52 bomber. James Earl Jones co-stars in another nuclear-war film (SEE: "Dr. Strangelove"), only this time it's serious. The only problem with this DVD is that there are NO special features; no trailers, no featurettes, no nothing. Otherwise, a great film and a must-see.
