Movie Reviews of Burnt by the Sun

Movie Review: Transfer to DVD could have been better
Summary: 4 Stars

The story is excellent and I really like the movie, I would have given it 5 stars if it weren't for the sloppy/thoughtless effort in transferring the film onto DVD. I would let the readers read other reviews on the movie itself and I would only comment on the transfer.
As indicated on the box, this is not an anomorphic transfer and has an unusual aspect ratio (somewhere between 1.33 and 1.67). It looks really awarkard on a 16:9 screen. You cannot turn off the subtitles because it is part of the transfer. The picture is a little bit on the soft side while the color is very good. The audio is average. In conclusion, it is very watchable and I wished Columbia would just put in a little bit more effort in the transfer to promote foreign films.

Movie Review: Definitely added to my collection of Russian movies
Summary: 4 Stars

I can't believe the negative reviews here about this movie.(?) I think you have to have a good understanding of Russian culture and of the era this movie took place in to appreciate its depth. But if you do have a good grasp on Russian history and culture and still don't find it to your liking, then maybe it is just not your cup of tea-however, it does not mean the movie is not good. From the amazon.com description and from the good reviews here, there is not much more I can add, except for it is one of my most favorite Russian movies, one that I've just gladly added to my collection. I hope others give it a chance! Watch it very closely-It is a classic work of genius.

Movie Review: Scott Hoerle
Summary: 4 Stars

This film offers a nuanced view of Stalin's purges during the 1930s. It tells of Colonel Kotov, a hero from the civil war who is absolutely dedicated to building the Soviet State. Even this good Communist is not immune to the terror, however. A mysterious guest arrives, the uncertainty of Kotov's world unravels, and political realities close in. The film provides an excellent glimpse of the USSR during the period before World War II.

Movie Review: Good
Summary: 4 Stars

Beautiful little gem with the main sound leaving you humming for days. This reminds me more of a play, than a movie.. in the lines of Pride and Prejudice. The ending is an unexpected twist and Mikhalkov's real life daughter puts on a superb performance.

Movie Review: a great movie
Summary: 4 Stars

saw this when it came out, got it as a present for my friend the playwright who also saw it but who was delighted to own it & be able to see it again.

definitely worth it, touching, heartfelt.
