Movie Reviews of Burnt Offerings

Movie Review: Greatest haunted house movie ever
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an incredible film, very underappreciated & I'm glad to hear that it's being made available on DVD. I've never seen it in widescreen, so a DVD release is great news. The plot is dense, the music eerie & ominous, & the performances are unforgettable. The mansion where it was filmed was still standing as of 1997 & probably is still there.

Incidentally, this was not Bette Davis's last movie. She did several more before she died, including the 1978 Disney sequel, "Return From Witch Mountain", which also featured Anthony James (the "Burnt Offerings" chauffeur). I can't think of anything else Anthony James has been in, but he's left an indelible mark on film history with his "Burnt Offerings" appearances.

Movie Review: Among the scariest movies I've ever seen
Summary: 5 Stars

I can't remember how old I was when I first saw this film, but it terrified me. Like so many other reviewers, the chauffeur and his hearse were absolutely terrifying. I am 45 years old and I still feel a little freaked out when for whatever reason I recall that image. Bette Davis' death in the film was also a major, major creeper, and ranking up there with the chauffeur was the malevolence in Karen Black's face and body language at the end of the film. Despite the fact that I think it's an excellent film, I've never been able to get myself to watch it again. Everyone who even remotely enjoys good horror films should see this at least once. In this case, once is enough.

Movie Review: MOST TERRIFYING MOVIE
Summary: 5 Stars

A family rents an isolated house for a summer vacation. Part of the deal is that they must look after the little old lady in the attic. Almost from the start, sinister thing start happening. One of the most effective techniques is the husband's flashbacks to his mother's funeral, in particular, a vision of a grinning hearse driver. Other memorable scenes include a swimming pool that behaves like a storm at sea and the house renewing itself by replacing its tiles. This is one of the most disturbing movies I have ever seen and it sure beats most popular horror movies for drawn-out suspense and psychological terror. This one stays with you weeks after you've watched it.

Movie Review: stays with you
Summary: 5 Stars

A family rents a house and part of the deal is that they must look after the little old lady who lives in the attic and whom we never see.You will not be let down by this movie. Its intelligent and leaves you thinking about it--in my case 2 years later. If you are a "disturbing movie" fan this is the one for you.Burgess Meredith shines in the short role of the house owner and old lady`s son. Also good ol Bette Davis stars, and is forever fantastic,as the granmother of the family. It would be similar in style to The Changeling as regards atmosphere and that late 70s-80s "feel".The flashba....no.no more. You need to see it.

Movie Review: creepy fun "burnt offerings" gets it right.
Summary: 5 Stars

i saw this when i was little and it scared me to death and it is still one of the creepist movies ever made. the rolf family rent a summer home at a fantastic price and we know what that means!!! before the words "haunted" can leave your lips strange things begen to happen.the house is in need of something and the family is what it wants. really creepy is the driver that scared the husband as a kid as he haunts he in this house. he is just creepy. this one is for fans who like their horror a little less bloody but do love the cinima of the less is more crowd. well worth a look
