Movie Review: Was The Best Spy Show On TV
Summary: 5 Stars

Burn Notice - Season One
I laughed, I cried, especially when the show was cancelled. Can't wait to get the DVD. A number of great character actors in this one, Jeffrey Donovan played an escaped convict in a two part series in CSI: Miami (totally viscous!) Bruce Campbell, who could forget "Brisco County Jr". Gabrielle Anwar great in the remake of "The Body Snatchers". And for those of you that remember Sharon Gless co-star of "Cagney & Lacey" who plays the mother of the bad boy spy "out in the cold" Jeffrey Donovan, Sharon's character adds a lot of humor and turmoil to Jeff's character. Bruce Campbell is very funny and entertaining as a "best friend" who is an ex-spy snitching on his best friend Donovan for loose change and the ex-girlfriend back in his life to stay Gabrielle's character "Vee" is a let's shoot them all and let someone else sort them out. This series was too good for TV. In my opinion it was well written, not a gore fest that many seem to like these days and it was an intelligently written script also that made you think and pulled you into the action without a lot of "hand tipping" which poorly written shows are subject to. The premise "A spy is burned by his own agency and the reasons are unknown to him". He is just the kind of guy to find out who burned him and why and won't rest until he does. Okay, this is smart, sexy, funny and very entertaining. Try it you may like it.

Movie Review: Wow, James Bond has finally returned, and he's on TV
Summary: 5 Stars

I am more of a CSPAN or History Channel watcher than USA, but this show is something special. I remember "it Takes a Thief" and Michael Westin makes Alexander Munday look like an amateur in almost every way. He's always betting on both his instinct and intimate knowledge of how people act in stress situations.
I had a swimming coach who once said "In a stress situation, you revert to what you know best" This show illustrates what taking that understanding to the Nth degree produces.
Michael's background narrative is informative and humorous. You know why and how the deal is going down. This adds to the suspense. You're constantly wondering how the assumptions will play out.
I like that he's a little too much of a good guy, but finally takes a few stacks of 100's off a pallet of money he's being forced to deliver to help a client.
His ex-girlfriend Fiona is so hot and chaotic. His Mom and younger brother's inclusion in the series create an interesting profile of how Michael Westin was shaped.
His best friend Sam is incredibly entertaining. Lightly sarcastic, big dog friendly (special forces friendly) and always making the move. His female relationships are a part of the comedy of this show. OH did I mention, it's hilarious too! Best new show I've seen in... Heck, I don't even know.
Let me conclude by saying that I own season nothing of anything except "Burn Notice." I will be picking up season two the instant it is available.

Movie Review: A sign of intelligent life on TV
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a cleverly written show that's a masterful blend of James Bond action and MacGyver-like ingenuity with a lot of tongue-in-cheek humor thrown in for good measure. It's not your typical action show with blazing guns -- in fact, the main character, Michael, will do just about anything to avoid using violence. He prefers to use his head to help the bad guy do himself in.
The overall premise is that he's a spy who's been burned, and he's trying to find out what happened so he can clear his name. Along the way, he keeps getting talked into using his special skills to help people who have no other resources ala "the equalizer" (remember him?). The plots are clever, the humor is subtle and the cast is appealing.
Jeffrey Donovan (who was great in the short-lived US version of Touching Evil) is charming and clever; Gabrielle Anwar is Michael's unpredictable ex-spy-sometimes-girlfriend; and Bruce Campbell is the sidekick who although he acts like a goof-off, is a lot smarter than he looks. Sharon Gless as Michael's crazy, hypochondriac mom adds just the right touch of neurosis to the mix.
The writers have thrown in a liberal use of Michael's humorous voice-over explanations of his "how-to" spy tricks, a running gag about yogurt, and Fiona's cute little outfits and obsession with guns -- the bigger the better -- to win us over and keep us coming back for more. I've watched most of the episodes more than once and they do stand up to a second viewing.

Movie Review: don't ask, just buy it
Summary: 5 Stars

Burn Notice is one of the best shows to come along in a long while. I am so glad that I decided to give this show a try. It is clever and smart. Well written and well acted. I admit that I watched the first episode because of Bruce Campbell, but I was completely hooked long before the end of that episode. On the surface, it sounds like another "smart but misunderstood guy with quirky family and friends" show. But believe me it is so much more than that thanks to excellent writing and perfect casting.
The kooky mother is played to perfection by Sharon Gless; she walks that fine line and keeps an over-the-top character real. I've known people like her! Michael Westin (played by Jeffery Donovan) is someone you would want to know and keep on your good side. It is so much fun to just watch his expressions, but he is good action-wise too. And his smile could knock you out. Bruce Campbell is Bruce Campbell....always a joy. Fiona (Gabrielle Anwar) was a bit shaky at first with her Irish accent which couldn't have fooled a 2 year old, but she has dropped the accent and gotten a good hold on the character.
I shared the box set with my daughter and her husband and they are hooked as well. We are all anxiously awaiting season 2 on DVD. I love this show. Everyone should at least give it a try.

Movie Review: Jason Bourne, Meet McGyver
Summary: 5 Stars

This show is surprisingly well-written, engaging, and well acted for a summer filler show on USA. I loved seeing the process of making bombs and tracking devices out of household materials and products, like Mac used to do. Except Westen explains how to do it and Mac usually didn't. The chemstry between the 3 characters was great, the twists were intriguing, and it's always fun to see a professional field operative go up against a gang of street punks or kidnappers.
Ultimately, the central character is what makes a show like this. Magnum P.I. only works if Selick is appealing and complex, and this is a rich man's Magnum P.I. without the chest hair and lamborghini. It's like 24 if Jack Bauer had a sense of humor. It's...well, the best praise I can give it is that it is its own show, a clever and well crafted new take on a recognizable premise. Westen is a jaded professional spy, ruthless, brilliant, instinctive whose world is suddenly jolted akimbo. He has to reexamine his career up until now, and the choices that both led him into his profession and those he's made since. The family entanglements serve to force him to reopen old wounds and maybe even heal them. Familiar, yes, but the actor's wry sense of humor and single-mindedness give freshness to the concepts.
Highly recommended.
