Movie Reviews of Burn After Reading

Movie Review: Laughing All the Way . . .
Summary: 5 Stars

I checked the Amazon reviews of this film months ago and was surprised at the dichotomy of opinions then. Considering buying it now, I find that the polarity of opinions still exists. How interesting and typical of creative art sometimes. Personally, I'd say that this is one of my favorite Coen Brothers movies. Goes to show that humor is not a constant, but quite a variety of experiences, depending on the person and the mood they're in at the time.

Fortunately or not, the characters so brilliantly played in this movie bear resemblance to many real egos I've known . . . but they're also archetypes for comedic-tragic angst that besets all of us. Whether you can find humor in that may speak to how well you're processing those experiences. Personally, I found it hysterical!

Better see this film for yourself, instead of letting the reviewers decide for you.

Movie Review: Cheats, Lies and Scandels. Oh, and Brad Pitt.
Summary: 5 Stars

Yes, and Brad Pitt. Easily the best actor in the movie, he plays a dim-witted gym trainer who finds a disc and mistakes it for secret CIA files. What follows is almost like, but worse, (and funnier), than Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. And yes, they are sometimes very unfortunate.
The very well cast Burn After Reading is a smart and funny black comedy, even though the best parts are with Brad Pitt, he basically holds up the movie with his need to hydrate, make absurdly stupid plans, and ride bikes. ("You think that's a Schwinn!!!!")
In the end, the way the movie's unfortunate meetings, encounters, surprises, plain out dumb ways, ("Why would they go to the Russians?") work out excellently, making this one worth sitting down and watching. (A few times!)
5 Stars, Grade: A

Movie Review: Definitely Not Drivel
Summary: 5 Stars

The Coen Brothers are back. I know they won the Oscar for "No Country for Old Men". What I mean is that they are Lebowski back. Nobody could make absurdist comedy like the Coens when they were on their game. In this case they've made a caper film that's not really a caper film. To give away the film's imaginative twists would be a disservice. Just imagine, though, a film where the paths cross between a disgraced alcoholic Level 3 CIA analyst(John Malkovich), a sex addicted Treasury Department employee (George Clooney), a love-lorn gym employee(Frances McDormand) and a Good Sammaritan(Brad Pitt). Throw into the mix a disc that could shake this country to it's foundations. Imagine the mayhem that only the Coen's could concoct. This film seems to have a love it or hate it reaction. I loved it.

Movie Review: Burn After Reading DVD
Summary: 5 Stars

I really like the films of the Coen brothers. Both the noir and the comedies. I would like to divide their films in three rough categories: (1) the Noir (Blood Simple, No Country for Old Men), (2) the 'typical' Coen (Big Lebowski, Hudsucker Proxy, The Man Who wasn't There, Fargo, O Brother Where Art Thou). And (3) the 'lighter' comedies (Intolerable Cruelty, Ladykillers).
Burn After Reading belongs imo to category 3. The actors are excellent, the plot turns in ways hard to foresee and the clumsiness of everyone are really entertaining. The intro, with a Google Earth-like zoom from space into the CIA headquarters, make for an ironic framework suggesting overview and control where there is none.
The transfer of this DVD (R1) is very good, I watched it on a projector.

Movie Review: This is a funny dark comedy
Summary: 5 Stars

Burn After Reading is a good dark comedy from the Coen brothers. This movie has an all star cast. This movie is a commentary about what happens to people when they reach middle age. Frances McDormand steals the movie as a woman looking for love. She has a strong desire for cosmetic surgery that a lot of middle age women do. Brad Pitt is also funny as an employee of a health club. John Malkovich's character is going through a crisis after losing his job. He has some funny moments in the movie with just his physical presence. I really like the musical score that Carter Burwell did for this movie. The earth theme in the beginning of the movie is very upbeat. I liked watching the bonus features with the crew talking about making the movie.
