Movie Reviews of Burn After ReadingMovie Review: All-Star Cast Elevates Coen Brothers' Quirky Saga Summary: 5 Stars
"Burn After Reading" is the recent Cohn Brothers drama about a pair of not-too-bright gym employees (Brad Pitt, Frances McDormand) who discover what they think is classified CIA information on a disc left in a locker and try to demand a ransom for its return. Because they're not very good at blackmail, however, their plan soon spins way out of control. Costarring George Clooney, Tilda Swinton, John Malkovich, and Richard Jenkins, "Burn After Reading" is one of the quirkiest movies from the Cohns, who put "quirky" on the cinematic map. The revelation here is Brad Pitt, who plays his character, Chad Feldheimer, as an enthusiastic dimwit who never realizes he's way out of his depth. Watching him plot with coworker Linda Litzke (McDormand), who joins in the blackmail scheme because she needs a lot of cash for a series of cosmetic surgeries, is a joy. The movie is very funny, but does take a couple of unexpected detours to the dark side, so be warned. The DVD contains a making-of featurette and a comic piece featuring George Clooney as he returns for his third collaboration with Joel and Ethan Cohn.
Movie Review: Burn After Reading Summary: 5 Stars
Osbourne Cox, a Balkan expert, is fired at the CIA, so he begins a memoir. His wife wants a divorce and expects her lover, Harry, a philandering State Department marshal, to leave his wife. A diskette falls out of a gym bag at a Georgetown fitness center. Two employees there try to turn it into cash: Linda, who wants money for elective surgery, and Chad, an amiable goof. Information on the disc leads them to Osbourne who rejects their sales pitch; then they visit the Russian embassy. To sweeten the pot, they decide they need more of Osbourne's secrets. Meanwhile, Linda's boss likes her, and Harry's wife leaves for a book tour. All roads lead to Osbourne's house. This is entertaining, dark and very funny. The best part of the movie is watching this great cast perform brilliantly with the odd-ball material they are given. They are all straight men for the Coen brother's antics. There is violence, bad language, and everyone is sleeping with everyone else, especially George Clooney. This movie will not be to everyone's taste. I enjoyed this mini-masterpiece.
Movie Review: the brothers never disappoint Summary: 5 Stars
so much has been said about the movie so far so i'll spare all the details. wile browsing amazon I noticed that this movie only received three stars and thought that to be a travesty sooooo i had to intervene.
You can call this a dark comedy I suppose... only.. what the Coen brothers seem to be about is taking a light hearted comedy and just throwing in some insanely dark, brutal scenes. Having the two extremes side by side increases their potency. You'll be watching "chuckle laugh laugh" and then all of a sudden BAM! "wow...just.... wow" its this fearless juxtaposition that's made these guys two of my favorite directors... unfortunately, it seems that the general public would not agree.
I've noticed a lot of people who didn't like the movie saying the same thing "that was supposed to be a comedy?" well... no... it's a Coen brothers film. If your in the mood for a formulaic comedy you'll need to go somewhere else. It did have me laughing my fac off but the Coen brothers CAN be dark, very dark.
Movie Review: Pure Coen Genius Summary: 5 Stars
I don't understand the negative reception this movie seems to have gotten. This movie may not be for everyone, especially those who don't take Brad Pitt dying lightly, but it certainly isn't worthy of one-star reviews or a scathing negative critiques.
I've seen Burn After Reading several times now, and I've loved it every time. The acting is absolutely great, the script is brilliant, and the viewer is expected to actually get something out of the movie. This movie isn't necessarily meant to be a rip-roaring comedy (in my opinion), but rather a darkly humorous social critique embedded in a somewhat complex story. The characters in this movie, I think, could be better understood as caricatures who embody elements of contemporary society rather than actual real-life people.
Anyhow, this is just pure genius by the Coen Brothers. But hey, that's what we expect from them. One of the top five movies of '08, in my opinion.
Movie Review: A great comedy from two great directors Summary: 5 Stars
I loved this movie and I can't see how some poeple thought this was completly terrible. I think the performances were great. This movie sucked me in and had me laughing the whole time. Brad Pitt, John Malkovich, George Clooney, and Frances McDormand played their roles great, I wouldn't have had it any other way. I'm sorry that this movie had an original story unlike most comedies that have come out recently. Maybe the story of Burn After Reading didn't amount to anything at the end but thats what made it so funny. It was about a handful of morons whose paths cross due to cheating on spouses, dumbfounded CIA agents, and supposed secret documents from the CIA. This movie was one of the more original comedies I have seen in a long time. I'm sorry but comedies lately have just reused the same jokes that have been around for years. I don't know maybe some people just don't like the dry black comedy that the brilliant Coen Brothers offer.
