Movie Reviews of Bug (Special Edition)Movie Review: Inside the mind of a paranoid schitzophrenic Summary: 5 Stars
This is truly an original !
If you are not interested in a deep character study, and especially in psychology, then you will probably be dissapointed in this movie.
If you are, however interested in the workings of the mind of someone with a mental illness, then you will probably be intrigued by this movie.
It starts out with Ashley Judd, a lonely unhappy woman who has had more than her share of tragedy in life. She has a recently paroled husband who terrorizes her, and years earlier, her 7 year old son was abducted, which the guilt from that alone was probably what made her give up on life.
Anyway, her co-worker introduces her to a drifter, who she becomes quickly attached to.
The role she plays is so sad. She is so lonely, that she overlooks this new guy's quirky personality, and becomes totally convinced that he was part of an experiment while in the service, and was injected with bugs. These egg sacs are supposed to be growing and hatching in him and he uses self-mutilation to remove them.
She, too becomes convinced that she is infected and starts digging at herself.
From here, the level of paranoia and insanity the two of them go through will make you want to SCREAM !!
At one point in the movie when he begins pulling out his teeth with pliers...you just MUST turn away.
And what he finds here under the microscope, had me thinking "IS he really crazy?"
And the longer she is with him, she begins to be just as bad as him, or even worse in her delusions...up to the point that the whole room is literally COVERED in foil.
I know, I know!! - I am giving away a lot here, but as deep as this mind trip goes, it really is only a small part I gave away, and I only did that to peak some interest in this story (which I think is EXCELLENT) because of all the bad reviews it got.
I say, give it a chance! It's truly original, interesting, intense, and CREEPY!!! And the end will totally leave you in shock !
I give it 5-plus stars.
Movie Review: "I AM THE SUPER MOTHER BUG" Summary: 5 Stars
Bug is one of my favorite movies ever made. Several reasons why.
A- The acting is astounding. Ashley Judd just tears up the screen. And Michael Shannon as creepy Peter was cast perfectly. It couldn't have been a better chemistry for 'CRAZY'.
B- The script and story. Remember the guy who wrote the legendary `The Exorcist'? Well, he wrote this! Peters monologue at the end of the film made me want to memorize it for myself and go around repeating it to my friends just to get a laugh. I suppose it wasn't meant to be funny but I've seen this movie so many times that by now it has become hilarious to me. Much of the dialogue is funny but you have to be paying attention. Lastly, Judd's delivery is priceless! "C'mere boy!"
C- Quick pace. You will not get bored.
D- This movie delivers on all three genres its listed under- HORROR, THRILLER, DRAMA. It's silly as hell, too, but I guess they couldn't bill it that way. Oh, and disturbing, too, I don't mean to take anything away from Friedkins' work. This movie will stay with you because of the way the characters, especially Judd, deteriorate.
Just wanted to mention that Ashley Judd is one of the prettiest actresses in Hollywood and really lets her true self shine through in this performance, it had an authenticity to it that I found refreshing. I found I liked everything about her in the interviews I saw, too. I found myself actually perusing her other work on Netftix and buying her makeup line at Kohl's because I really feel like she's the real deal and what she represents is natural and honest, that was my interpretation, anyway. I even discovered she had a clothing line at a store in the southern United States. Wow.
Well, if Kate Hudson can have a hair care line and Jessica Simpson can have a wig line then why can't Ashley have her own lines?
But no, really this is a creepy, engrossing, hilarious, wtf movie that you will LOVE!!!!
Or your money back.
Movie Review: Perfect Tension, A Realistic Drama of Conspiracy and Delusion Summary: 5 Stars
The Acting in this movie was amazing. This story incorporates so many unsavory facts espoused by Conspiracy Theorists and Personalities from Alex Jones to David Icke. Ashley Judd plays a waitress beaten down by life, through an abusive ex, and an abducted child. She is scared and desperately lonely, and occaisionally indulges in a powdery substance we are supposed to think is cocaine and crack cocaine. But if you know anything about it, you would know its meth (allegorical substitution?).
Amphetamines and Methamphetamines fueled WW2 and economic growth from then to around 1970 when the drug war started. Meth is still on occaision given to our troops to keep them awake on extended operations. They come home with PTSD and Gulf War Syndrome amongst other mental conditions.
Stateside, doctors no longer pass it out as candy since Nixon, but strangely trace amounts of barium and a meth extract mysteriously falls on our heads from clouds in the sky.
People go to the Doctors complaining of bugs in their bodies who diagnose them as having Delusional Parasitosis, a mental condition. "I'm not crazy", answers the patient who usually gets no treatment. Doctor then accuses grandma of acquiring Delusional Parasitosis by being a meth head. Granny is hacked off, and rightly so.
I bring this up so as not to spoil the film, but answer some of the negative reviews by folks who seem to have a high degree of blind faith in our institutions. The recent Guatamala syphilis story came out to remind us, that any of us could be a test subject at any time.
Because of the themes and allegories mentioned. This film is a bit high-brow, so don't expect the general unwashed to understand this film. This is for those who enjoy both mainstream and independant films, not really the Transformers lot of filmgoers. No doubt this review will confuse the already confused who didn't understand the movie.
Movie Review: Bug: an intense, psychological character study Summary: 5 Stars
I remember seeing trailers last year (2006) and being intrigued. It seemed like a bug in the bloodstream horror flick. It is not. It is so much more! The movie begins subtly, getting to know a couple of low-life losers, Agnus (Ashley Judd, astonishing conviction in a very unglamorous role) and ex Gulf War veteran Peter (Michael Shannon, revising a role he did on the stage--this is based on Tracy Letts play [he wrote the screenplay]; it's a powerful, intense performance you won't soon forget). Harry Connick Jr. plays Agnus's abusive ex, a just released convict, teetering on the edge of menace, of violence. Lynn Collins brings emotional kick to Agnus's lesbian co-worker. All of
the acting is top-notch (Hell, I'd give Judd and Shannon Oscars or at least some kind of recognition for the conviction--again that word--which they bring to the roles). William Friedkin (yes, the guy who directed The Exorcist) directs with a perfect, nervous energy and pacing. Since I don't want to blow the whole thing, let's just say that paranoia amps to a high-pitch and a stronger character works it into a weaker character's mindset and all madness breaks lose. The final third of this movie is about as intense as I've ever seen, Peter tossing off lines that mix the People's Temple, Tim McVeigh, Ted Kazinski, etc., in a flourish of deep conspiracy driven insanity justifying everything, and Agnus locks in and has a wonderful sequence in which she pieces together a wild reason for the loss of her child and more, at the insistence of Peter's relentless prodding; it's almost as if they become one character. (Actually, it's almost as if she takes over; Peter even looks almost scared of her when she takes control.) Anyway, that's too much info. If you are looking for a psychological character study gone truly mad, this is the
one. Highly Recommended!

Movie Review: A really fantastic, interesting movie. Summary: 5 Stars
I had wanted to see this movie since it came out in theaters because I've always loved Ashley Judd,I never got a chance to because it left so quickly. I can completely understand why it failed during it's theaterical release...the marketing for it was WAY off. This is not a horror movie, its not suspense, its not action nor is it a love story...its all 4 put together in a very unsettling, twisted way.
Agnes lives alone in an old motel in the middle of nowhere. She works in a lesbian bar and pretty much only has one friend...who is also a lesbian. Shes, of course, avoiding men because of her abusive husband who left a couple years earlier. Shes also very scarred by the kidnapping of her 6 year old son 10 years earlier.
One night her friend comes by with a strange, kind of creepy guy named Peter on their way to a party. Peter seems really sweet and kind of slow at first and he and Agnes seem to find something in each other that no one else has.
This friendship turns into love pretty quickly and Agnes is very desperate for something to love...little does she know that Peter has a secret that will eventually be the end of them both.
I've read warnings in other reviews, if you are squeemish with bugs, don't worry...trust me. Not to give anything away, but...just trust me.
As I said before, this is not a horror movie as it was marketed, its more of a character study. Yes, it IS pretty slow at times but it really kept my attention throughout. It was very interesting to watch what seemed to be, because of the excellent and very believable performances, a true descent into madness.
I completely recommend this movie. Buy it, rent it, just give it a chance.
