Movie Reviews of Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Movie Review: Nothing like the series - so please don't compare the two!!
Summary: 4 Stars

This movie is the prequel to the popular TV show. While the title, main character, and writer are the same - the two have nothing else in common.

While the series got many marvelous reviews (and justly so), the movie is laegely ignored - because it is so different than the series in its lightheatedness that it is largely ignored - especially by many of the "die hard" Buffy TV show crowd. And as do most of these know - Joss Wheadon (who wrote the movie script & wrote / produces the TV show) hadn't envisioned his heroine to be the lighthearted silly girl Buffy turned out to be in the movie.

so why watch? To get a little more history about the Slayer legend (even though a large part of the "mythology" was changed between the movie & the TV show), to see a different take on the Slayer myth, but most of all - to enjoy a fluffy little movie, not a metaphor for life.

Movie Review: Horror and Comedy -- Well, just comedy
Summary: 4 Stars

Lots of big names in this one! Donald Sutherland and Rutger Hauer pulled off a comedy title while still giving a stunning performance. Kristy Swanson played the airheaded cheerleader so well that it was difficult to take her character (BUFFY) seriously later in the film (This is why I gave it a 4 instead of a 5). David Arquette was VERY FUNNY especially doing his impression of the cowardly lion. Lots of high school humor and pretty girls -- Boy, do I miss my High School days!
This movie is similiar to "Scary Movie" and "Army of Darkness" in that the settings are dark with the smell of death but you are too busy laughing to take the horror elements to seriuosly. Make NO mistake -- THIS IS A COMEDY (and it is a great one!) No Vile langauge and No Nudity in this one but because of the violent nature of the subject matter it earned a PG-13 rating. I give it two stakes up!!!

Movie Review: The Original Comedy That Started It All!
Summary: 4 Stars

This was Joss Whedon's 1992 movie that started the whole Buffy phenomena. It featured Kristy Swanson, Donald Sutherland, Paul Reubens, Rutger Hauer, Luke Perry and David Arquette. The movie was much more comedic than the television series. Buffy is portrayed as a young woman who's biggest concern is her popularity and being on the cheerleading squad. It's a fun bit of fluff . . . right down to Buffy's "secret weapon" for knowing vampires are around is menstrual-like cramps! The movie may not appeal to all fans of the television show and vice versa. Overall it's just a lot of Mel Brooks type slapstick humor that would appeal to fans of that kind of comedy or naturally to fans of vampire comedys. It's a truly fun movie!

Movie Review: Funny movie that takes a beating because of the series
Summary: 4 Stars

This movie is funny. Unfortunately, it is dissected by the hardcore Buffy fans that were lured in by their love of the television series, and subsequently bashed.

I liked this movie back in the day, and I still enjoy it. I never watched Buffy the Vampire slayer on TV, so I don't hold a grudge against this movie as its predecessor.

If you watch this movie expecting what you saw on TV, you will be disappointed, but it's unfair to drag this movie into the mud just because it's not the same thing as the TV show.

Overall, it's a funny movie that will give you a few laughs and that you'll enjoy, as long as you don't watch it expecting Buffy from the WB series.

Movie Review: Better than they say
Summary: 4 Stars

I remember being about 5 years old watching this movie and thinking it was the greatest movie of all time. But then about 5 years later I was driving down the street and say a poster for the Buffy TV Show. I ran home and looked up when It premired and it was that night. I watched the first episode and never looked back til about a year ago. The film was still funny, but after seening the TV which is an outstanding show, it was kind-of cheesy. If you like comedy-horror films this is for you, if you like serious horror with a touch of comedy stick to the show. But it is nice to see how greaty improved Joss Whedon has come (Thank God). If your a fan - perfect, if your not - stay clear away.
