Movie Reviews of Buffy the Vampire SlayerMovie Review: Suspend your love of the show, sit back and enjoy the fun. Summary: 4 Stars
I've been a fan of vampire movies my whole life and some of my favorites are from the 80s, like The Lost Boys and Fright Night. So when Buffy the Vampire Slayer came out in the early 90s, I saw it. This was before it was ever made into a television show. I think that's why I like it so much. People who saw the television show first tend to dislike the movie and find it too campy. As much as I love the series, I still think the movie is a riot. Most of the same basic elements are there that eventually became the show. The Slayer, the Watcher, the vampires. But the television show had the advantage of having hours and hours of screen time to play out the mythology slowly. The movie only had 90 minutes. If you can put your love of the TV show on hold and just enjoy the movie as if it were one of the funnier episodes (The Zeppo, Beer Bad) I think you'll really like it. Don't try to nitpick the mistakes in mythology and just enjoy the absurdities like Paul Reubens' hysterical extended death scene.I'm only giving this 4 stars because I feel that since the show has gone on to critical acclaim and seven seasons, they should really put out a DVD with some quality extra features like writer or director commentary and a featurette.
Movie Review: Forget the T.V. show Summary: 4 Stars
This is a brilliant movie! Like "Repo Man", it's a genre movie in an unusual setting- in this case a vampire movie set in the world of Valley girls. It was "Clueless" before "Clueless", and it has vampires! What more could you ask for? Well, there's plenty more! Paul Reubens is almost unrecognizable in his brilliant performance as a seedy, long-haired vampire- his death scene is the funniest ever in movies- it doesn't finish until the end of the credits. Luke Perry is great as the grungy loser who stumbles on the underworld of vampires. Kristy Swanson as Buffy is terrific also, in my opinion so much more appealing and likeable than what's-her-name from the t.v. show. The script is loaded with great one liners, like "you threw a knife at my head!" and my favorite, "Kill him a lot!" And the vampires are fun-loving wackos who crash senior dances and play basketball. And they don't look like Klingons like in the t.v. show. I'm not saying the t.v. series isn't good, but this is a completely different experience. Since the dvd hasn't come out yet, I can't really rate that-my rating is based on the movie itself. Do yourself a favor and watch it.
Movie Review: Don't have the DVD Summary: 4 Stars
So I gave it 4 stars because I don't know what knid of extras there are on the disc. However, this is a good movie. It's early 90's so it's very pastel where the series is late 90's and a lot darker. It's been a while since I've seen it, but I immensely enjoyed it. I believe that Kristy Swanson's Buffy blows Sarah Michelle Gellar's away, but we have contrasting styles here. In the movie, Buffy finds out she's the slayer and has a considerably hard time believing it. She's an authentic teenager with clothes and boys on her mind. Gellar's Buffy is very used to the notion that she's got to save the world. It's early 90's and fashion has changed since then, but I think the concept remains intact. Call it a period piece. The cast is worth taking a look at, and any Buffy fan will like this as long as they've pondered finding out the news. This is NOT a kid's movie. There is some real gore in this and the language as you'd expect is rather harsh in places, although I'd say there's nothing in this movie a 16 year old hasn't seen on network tv before. I'll buy this DVD soon.
Movie Review: Oh come now Summary: 4 Stars
Really folks, those of you who came to be fans of the TV series before seeing the movie need to get a grip and lighten up. Whatever the original film was supposed to be, Buffy is just a silly, off-the-wall comedy in the same vein as classics like Weird Science and Ghostbusters. It's all about the laughs....get it? If you spend time picking apart character inconsistancies, plot plausibility, or actors' performances in a comedy, then the film is wasted on you. Stop holding it up against the series....which has had the advantage of having more time to develop and stir its ingredients. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that the movie and the series are two completely different entities. So view them as such. Buffy is a pretty hilarious little romp that's great for some simple laughs. The obsurdity of the subject matter versus the characters around whom the plot revolves is what makes the film so refreshingly original. If you like dark, somewhat campy, or unusual comedies.......pick this one up. You're sure to have some good laughs.
Movie Review: Better than the show Summary: 4 Stars
Buffy, the TV series, is nothing to the original movie. Yes, the series has better effects. Yes, it's acting is generally better. Yes, the vampires look and act as though they could actually kill something. But the movie will always remain my favorite of the two. There's something endearing about the bad 80's feel of the movie. It's refreshing to see a movie that bashes fitting into a lame crowd (as demonstrated when Buffy realizes that her shallow life before slaying was, in her words, "STUPID."). Kristy Swanson plays the role of Buffy. She delivers lines like "Does the word 'Duh' mean anything to you?" with perfect teenage exasperation. Donald Sutherland plays a fantastic Merrick, bringing an endearing eccentricity to his role as Buffy's tutor (or Watcher, as the term would later be coined on the TV show). If you're ever ridiculously bored, rent Buffy, pop a bowl of popcorn, and settle in for a fun, light-hearted movie.
