Movie Reviews of Buffy the Vampire Slayer - The Complete Third Season (Slim Set)

Movie Review: An Excellent Season of Buffy The Vampire Slayer!
Summary: 5 Stars

Although Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 3 is not as great season as the second one was, it still is one of the best TV shows ever. The second season was such a marevelous season that it was going to be hard to beat. While the third season doesn't beat the second in terms of story arcs, it does beat it on the amazing stand-alone episodes.

Buffy Summers ran off to Los Angeles at the end of last season leaving her friends and family with a sense of betrayal. She is a waitress in the season premeire episode "Anne". After an encounter with someone she met in the second season, she decides to move back to Sunnydale. The second episode, "Dead Man's Party", is mostly about the reactions of everyone she loves to her return. The third episode,"Faith, Hope, and Trick", sets off two important season arcs: the arrival of Faith, The Vampire Slayer and Angel's return from the demon dimension.

These arcs spin off into unexpected directions, and both are relativly over by the end of the season. Some standout arc episodes include "Enemies", where "Angelus" returns and "Consequences", where Faith's story takes a turn for the worst.

The Stand-alone episodes were the best of the season. "Band Candy" and "Lover's Walk" are excellent episodes that are completly funny. "The Wish" and its sequel "Dopplegangland" introduce the infamous Dark Willow, with Alyson Hannigan putting in the perfromance of the season. "Earshot" is an intriguing episode where Buffy starts to read minds after an encounter with a demon and hears a student planning to kill the students in the school.

Top 5 Episodes of the season:

1. Graduation Day Part II
2. Lover's Walk
3. Earshot
4. Enemies
5. Band Candy

Summary of Buffy the Vampire Slayer - The Complete Third Season (Slim Set)

The third season of Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer was marked by the arrival in Sunnydale of renegade slayer Faith (Eliza Dushku), a moody loner who seemed to like her demon-staking calling just a little too much. While Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) was always wary of Faith, the two developed a deep friendship and appreciative rapport--that is, until the evil mayor of Sunnydale (Harry Groener) tapped into Faith's dark side and lured her into his plot to take over the world, first as a double agent spying on Buffy, then as out-and-out nemesis. And as the mayor's ascension approached--which happened to fall on Sunnydale High's graduation day--Buffy and Faith's battles got nastier and nastier, as Buffy attempted to wrestle with her dark side (literally and figuratively), save the world and her friends, and keep her lover Angel (David Boreanaz) out of Faith's evil clutches.

Chock-full of exceptional episodes, this third season started out with a bang (the superb season opener "Anne," in which a runaway Buffy finally returns to her Slayer calling) and never let up. Among other highlights, the season introduced former vengeance demon and soon-to-be regular Anya (Emma Caulfield), fleshed out Angel's tortured character (and readied him for his own series), and featured a hilarious doppelganger Willow (Alyson Hannigan), a vampire from a parallel universe, who in Willow's own words was "evil and... skanky... and kinda gay!" (Total foreshadowing there, folks.) The season's pi?ce de r?sistance, though, was the two-parter "Graduation Day," wherein Faith tries to kill Angel, and the students of Sunnydale High prepare to do battle with a mutated mayor and his army of demons. Aside from the series' exceptional writing and acting, this compelling year of Buffy was anchored by the consistently excellent Gellar, as well as Dushku's complicated Faith, a girl you truly love to hate. By the time you finish these episodes, Faith will have cast a spell on you that you'll find very hard to shake. --Mark Englehart

All 22 classic episodes are available for the first time in this exclusive 6-disc collector?'s edition. From ?"Faith, Hope & Trick,?" ?"Band Candy?" and ?"Bad Girls?" to ?"Consequences,?" ?"Enemies?" and ?"Graduation Day, Part Two,?" these Season Three episodes are a must for every true Buffy fan.
