Movie Reviews of Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers: Three Nights on the Town

Movie Review: The One We've Been Waiting For
Summary: 5 Stars

Finally, a concert video that actually comes close to capturing the experience of a Bruce Hornsby concert!

Previous Hornsby videos have been OK for what they were - TV specials, staged concerts, stunt events full of "special guests." Hornsby's music and talent are too good to produce a bad show.

But this one, recorded at NYC's Town Hall during last year's Halcyon Days tour, is the real deal: Bruce and his band, the Noisemakers, in what feels like a complete show (it probably isn't, since they usually play longer than this, but since every Bruce show is different it doesn't matter that much; the editing is true-to-life, so it looks and feels like a real, complete show).

When you watch this band play you can see how closely attuned they are to each other, and how well they know Bruce's moves, and how well Bruce understands their capabilities. He can take off on an improvisation in the middle of a song and they know how and when to follow him (and when not to), and they can bring each other back to the song as if they're all mind readers. While there's a bit less adventuring in this show than usual, you can still feel that tightness, and the video captures it very well.

The video puts you right on stage, up close and personal, with cameras everywhere and plenty of face time for everyone. The editing is excellent, very sane, very attuned to the music, almost never getting in the way. The sound is equally good, a clean, clear concert mix that puts you in the front row without overwhelming you with audience ambience. DTS would have been nice, but the DD 5.1 is fine.

If you attended any of the band's concerts in the last year, this video will become a treasured souvinir. If you are a fan or Hornsby but haven't seen him live in a while, you will be amazed at how versatile and spontaneous, effortless and masterful his live performances have become. And if you're only casually familiar with Hornsby from his hits, you will be simply astonished by one of America's most talented musicians, performing here at the height of his powers, supported by a band that complements him in every respect.

I had high hopes for this disc since I first heard about its planned release, and for once my expectations have been exceeded.

Very highly recommended.

Movie Review: A fantastic DVD
Summary: 5 Stars

Having seen Bruce Hornsby live in concert many times all over the country, I was especially excited about the release of this DVD. The main reason I was excited is because it was touted as a real show from a real setting, and that it was. Bruce and the band spent a week in New York City last fall. They played three shows, and one of those is featured on the DVD. It captures what has come to be admired by us die-hard Hornsby fans: Bruce's improvisational wizardry and the band's ability to follow him wherever he goes.

The DVD also features interviews with the band members. Having met all of these guys, I can tell you that they are genuinely nice, hard-working people who respect Bruce very much and enjoy playing with him. I think the main reason they like it so much is that every night is different. It's not like touring with The Eagles or Phil Collins where every single show is the same. With Bruce, the setlist is made up on the fly, as are the arrangements of the songs. How many artists can say that?

In summary, this disk is a must-have for Hornsby fanatics like me. For those who would like to rediscover Bruce Hornsby and find out what he's been doing since "The Way It Is" was released in 1986, this disk will get you caught up-and amaze you in the process.

Movie Review: 3 Nights of Excellence!
Summary: 5 Stars

This DVD rocks!

Bruce and the Noisemakers have set the standard for serious listeners and serious musicians alike.

Beginning with a interview-like approach, the viewer travels with Bruce to the NY Blue Note. Very candid conversations, play, and performance.

Then, a stunning performance at NY Town Hall that will get you out of your seat just watching Bruce and the Noisemakers do their thing. Great improv, spontaneous remarks and play that are nearly as good as being there in person. The interaction between Bruce and the band is tremendous, with every talented member flowing in sync with Bruce.

This DVD gives the viewer the experience of watching and hearing a musical journey that at times is sailing along smoothly, and at others is like a wild ride down Thunder Road! But oh so together!

This video is a must for anyone who enjoys music, be it rock, jazz, blues, or pop, and particularly for musicians of any level.

High marks for one of the best music videos I have seen period!

Movie Review: Many Many Weeks In Town With This Incredible Performance!
Summary: 5 Stars

I normally check in [...] to see when my favorite musicians and performance artists will be out on-the-road..., and am I ever sorry that I missed Hornby's last year's New York City's Town Hall and Blue Note performances.

But this DVD captures the true essence of what I missed... plus I can see it many many times over my home theater system, as this is truly a DVD masterpiece! It is well conceived, edited, and extremely well recorded. Bruce Hornsby is playful, very loose on stage, a DVD which showcases many on his fans favorite tunes, in a very jazzy, improvisational, and very very tight performances with his band members, all of which really outshine following Hornsby superb piano playing and singing. This is truly talent at its best. I have all of Bruce Hornby's DVD and CD's, but this one is the best of them all. It is highly recommended. And for those who think that they have a good sound and video system at home, this DVD is truly a measuring tool. It deserves to be played loud. You'll be proud you did!

Movie Review: Bruce Flying
Summary: 5 Stars

I've long been a fan of Bruce - since Mandolin Rain. Always really liked his stuff - occasional great songs, varied repertoire and always seemed to bring back good memories. But there was always a bit of the 'stuck in cupboard' feel to his music. Somehow it didn't sound 'free' with the electronic drums and the rather flat sound - dulled down. It never did him justice and particularly so when he moved into the more jazzy era.

That has all now changed with this DVD. It sizzles and rattles and tinkles and just all comes out!!

He is truly an extraordinary talent and his band aren't far behind, but it is the exquisite sound of this piece that is so inspiring. Full of grit and sweat.

Certainly - and by some measure - the best music DVD I have ever listened to / watched.

And, no, I'm not one of Bruce's band or groupies (If he has any). I'm an Irishman living in Hong Kong who is mighty glad he came across this.

Just waiting for his Asian Tour??!!
