Movie Review: Brown Sugar Summary: 4 Stars
I agree with a previous reviewer that this is one of those movies that I gladly supported by seeing 3 times upon its release because it's a love story as opposed to a gang-banging, drug related shoot em up. I love seeing movies with attractive African American actors playing upwardly mobile responsible adults.
It was also a clever twist to use hip hop as a metaphor for the lead characters life long relationship and I truly didn't feel like they beat me over the head with the comparisons. Initially I thought I was seeing a film about two people who'd grown up loving hip hop, had careers related to hip hop and then fell in love but as the movie went on, I realized that their relationship & the evolution of hip hop were one & the same.
Since others have detailed the movie plot, I just wanted to add my two cents regarding likes & dislikes.
Likes:
SANAA LATHAN is again terrific as the everywoman. I think she's such a good actress because in all of her films, she makes me FEEL her character's emotions. I believe her as the confident editor of a hip hop magazine and I believe her as a young confused woman who realizes that she is in love with her best friend.
QUEEN LATIFAH & MOS DEF - scene stealers, both are fantastic in their supporting roles
NICOLE ARI PARKER - ever fabulous as the bride who slowly realizes that she doesn't really know the man she's married
BORIS KODJOE - always gorgeous to look at, he is good as the self-absorbed baller. (His drunk behavior at the Holiday party always cracks me up!)
THE EXTRAS - although I would have liked a short series of interviews with the cast regarding their true feelings about hip hop - how it's influenced them, "when they first fell in love with hip hop", etc; the deleted scenes along with the director's commentary was interesting & the videos were a treat
Dislikes
TAYE DIGGS - he is not one of my favorite actors so it took a lot for me to accept him in this role. He's good but not entirely believable as a record exec
CHEMISTRY - there was no romantic chemistry between the two leads, Sanaa & Taye which made their storyline of the least interest to me
Overall I am glad I added this disc to my collection because I'd rather see different aspects of "Black love" portrayed than "black on black crimes" on the big screen.
Movie Review: Contrary to what others may believe Summary: 4 Stars
I thought this movie was a true breathe of fresh air. Even though others believe that Diggs role wasn't convincing as a hip hop head, you have to stop an realize that this man wasn't just the average hip hop head rocking hoodies and timbs with a backpack. Diggs character was a well rounded educated black man who had a love for his music and still carried himself as a buisness man. Sanaa once again played a great role in the movie. Boris Kodjoe was a dissapointment to me because his character wasn't that big of a stretch for him if you have seen much of his other work. His role was typical and to say he stole the show is a tad bit to much. Mos Def on the other hand did a great job in this movie and put his acting and rhyming skills on display for all to see. This movie in my opinion is a pretty good movie with a few exceptions in acting. This movie is hip hop, not RAP. Their is a difference. If you think I'm playing with you...then look at the MC's that they interview to start the movie...those are hip hop artist, NOT rappers (i.e. rin and tin the spotted dalmations).
Movie Review: too true! Summary: 4 Stars
This movie was sort of an outcry to musicians to stop this mess that is out now. So called hip hop and rap have been run amok, has been ever since the demise of 2pac and biggie. Lost even more when Jam Jay took the loss shortly after the movie's release. What this movie stands for on top of that though, is that you have to stand up for what u want. Taye and Sanaa wanted each other, but let it slide for quite a while. Even put up with a marriage and an engagement before the two realized they were meant to be more than friends. Even with all that the underlying meaning of the whole thing was that hip hop/rap sucks now. Sanaa even says "what's the differance between loving someone and being in love with them? The same as the differance between hip hop and rap. Loving someone is just saying the words." Just like rap is meaningless b.s. and hip hop was an entire movement, way of life and emotion. Rap is garbage and it's making everyone else look like crap too. But I like the movie. and I love what it had to say in a roundabout way.
Movie Review: A fine romantic comedy that shows love for hip-hop Summary: 4 Stars
I wasn't expecting much from "Brown Sugar," but it is one of the better romantic comedies of the last few years. The film is about two childhood friends who bonded because of their love of hip-hop, which continues into the present. They appear to be in love with one another, yet both get involved in separate relationships during the film. Also, Taye Diggs' character is struggling at a major record label, while the beautiful Sanaa Lathan is a successful writer/editor of XXL magazine. I won't give away the plot, though given the genre this is relatively predictable stuff. But the feelings are so deeply felt and the love of music so powerful that this overcomes its formulaic subject matter. Especially great is rapper Mos Def as an up-and-coming MC. Not only is he a terrific rapper, but a fine comedic actor. One last thing: the opening of the film with interviews of many important people in hip-hop (Pete Rock, Russell Simmons, et. al.) expressing their love for the music sets the scene for the film exquisitely.
