Movie Review: Give this movie a chance...
Summary: 5 Stars
My first impression was that this was just another "urban" movie being released to the market.Boy, am I happy to say that I was wrong. This is a delightful movie about the celebration of love, friendship and music (hip hop in particular). Although a knowledge of this particular genre of music will be helpful in order to fully appreciate Brown Sugar, it won't deter you from enjoying it.
The movie deals with two people, Dre and Sidney, best friends, who been in love with hip hop and each other since elementary school. Later in adulthood, they are faced with the decision of staying just friends or moving their relationship to the next step.
The movie has excellent performances by Taye Diggs and Sanaa Lathan and a strong supporting cast led by Mos Def and Queen Latifah.
Rent it or buy it, you won't be dissapointed.

Brown Sugar is one the "classics" that I watch over and over again. You have to love hip in order to truly love this dvd. The movie starts off with comentary from old skool hiphop artists and draws from their lyrics throughout the movie. Then goes on to show the difference fromn real hip hop to commercial hip hop. Taye Diggs and Sanaa Lahan are a great pair. The supporting cast (Queen Latifah, Mos Def, Nicole Ari Parker and Boris Kodjoe) are wonderful too. Very realistic in 1990's Manthattan. Makes you compare the first time you fell in love and the first time you feel in love with hip hop. For hip hop head this is a must have additon to your movie collection.Movie Review: FEEL GOOD BLACK MOVIE OF 2002!!! Loved it to "DEF"!!

This movie was beyond fantastic! Maybe some hip-hop heads may think it's too "touchy-feely" for them, but contrary to their veiw, this movie was beyond what I expected. I liked the movie so much I saw it 3 times in the theaters...FOR ANYONE WHO HAS EVER HAD A DEEP FRIENDSHIP THAT BLOSSOMED INTO A PASSIONATE & MEMORABLE ROMANCE, THIS MOVIE IS A MUST-SEE... I could relate all the way through... I love the way this movie was put together... Presented the classy, soulful sides of the Black community. Two thumbs up to the director!
This film truely encompasses my 3 greatest love affairs-- BLACK MUSIC, BLACK LOVE, & TRUE FRIENDSHIP.

I remember watching brown sugar in the theatres a long time ago and now I am glad to watch it again. Who said that two best friends can't hook up? If they knew it each other kicking it from since they were small, there is no doubt that love cannot be felt among them. Dre & Sydney were in love with each other from since day one. They both loved hip hop grew up with it and promoted hip hop when they were older. Hip Hop brought them together. It is a good movie for those who like movies with love in it also. Once Again, Queen Latifah is so extrodinary in this movie I really enjoyed watching this DVD when I first purchased it because Queen Latifah is such a professional actor and I LOVE every single movie that she has played in because she deserves it all because it seems that everytime she gets a new role movie she continues to do so well in every movie that she has gotten a role for. Queen Latifah Stay Strong and Keep your head up
