Movie Reviews of Brother Sun, Sister MoonMovie Review: A moving, spiritual experience Summary: 5 StarsFor those who want a spiritual (but not religious) experience with a movie, "Brother Sun, Sister Moon" fits the bill. The cinematography and music are gorgeous. The story line closely follows the life of St. Francis. And the final scenes (with Alec Guinness) can make you cry in a joyful way. I found it powerfully moving.
Movie Review: St. Francis Summary: 5 StarsThis man, is his simplicity and ability to look PAST the religiosity of his time, has impacted the world in a wonderful way. I nearly cried when the Pope broke down the walls of religion and kissed St. Francis' feet! He was acknowledging what Francis had been saying,.."Don't worry about the things in THIS life! Just love God and keep life simple."
Movie Review: beautiful film...... Summary: 4 StarsBROTHER SUN, SISTER MOON is a beautiful film, directed by Franco Zefferelli, that chronicles the life of St. Francis of Assisi (Graham Faulkner), following his time in the war and his eye-opening conversion, to serve God and cast away ties to the material world. St. Francis (or Francesco, as he is known to his affluent family and friends) also has a chance encounter with Clare (St. Clare), beautifully played by Judi Bowker. Francis is labelled as mad by his family, as well as many of the townspeople, and stuns everyone when he would rather spend time smelling flowers, admiring the beautiful simplicity of the life of birds and butterflies and reflecting on his true calling, in God's eyes.
At first, this film was a little difficult for me to connect with. At times, the pacing and direction felt more like a rock music video than a movie (it definitely has a 1970s feel to it). Also, the music of Donovan, featured in the film, at first felt quite out of place. Eventually the melodious and understated quality to his songs definitely grew on me. The cast was so beautiful here and it is really surprising that this was the only film that Graham Faulkner was known for. His portrayal of Francis was glowing, sensitive and genuine. I definitely reccomend this film as a great period piece, once you take the time to let it grow on you.
Movie Review: Pure Spirit Summary: 5 StarsMethinks the Amazon reviewer doth protest too much! Does this movie's powerful and simple message cut too far into the bone of materialism for his taste?
This exquisitely delicious movie had me transformed with its unforgettable portrayal of the purity of truly following in the path of Jesus, when I first saw it in the 70s. It was one of the first VHS movies I bought, when technology allowed them to be available for public purchase.
This movie is exactly what being a hippie in the 60s and 70s was all about! Some media mouthpieces, with vested interests in "the establishment", or those who never understood, try to bitterly portray the period as one of self-centered indulgences of drugs and sex, in an attempt to revise history. The intense power of love, peace, altruism, spirituality and the shedding of materialism, that swept over the youth of those times was an extreme threat to the establishment. (Why do you think they so tightly control the media now, thus public opinion?)
{"Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; ...sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come follow me.... it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of the needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven..."}
This spiritually inspiring movie is also a social commentary, still relevant today, as it puts to shame the encrusted machinery of even our modern churches. Catch, too, the father in the movie, uncaring for his poor workers, or reveling in the spoils of war. A timely, and relevant concept with our current war profiteers (Crusaders again,) unable to stop themselves. Francis would not believe what he would see in today's modern mega churches, preaching brazen public piousness, praying for greedy prosperity, and beating the drum for war, while ostracizing the peacemakers.
The cinematography is not to be missed! Francis and Clare were portrayed with innocence and modesty. The mother's lullaby is so tender and lovely, and I say, "Bring Back Donovan!"
Movie Review: Assisi, Italy was very Beautiful Summary: 3 StarsThe only reason I watched Brother Sun, Sister Moon was because I was in Assisi, Italy and learned about St. Clare. I read everything I could on her life. I already knew about St. Francis, and St. Clare was one of his devoted followers. Someone told me that this movie was all about their lives. I watched the movie and it did follow their lives to the "T". I felt that the actors weren't that good, but just knowing the story made it worth watching. I have given the DVD to friends that went with us to Assisi, Italy.
