Movie Reviews of Brother Sun, Sister Moon

Movie Review: Adds To My Confusion
Summary: 2 Stars

While I am fascinated with the saints who gave up wealthy and carefree lives to preach the faith and serve the poor like Saints Francis, Clare, Augustine of Hippo, and Mother Teresa, I am disheartened by the glamorous biographies portrayed in film. The saints are fictionalized with the facts of their lives disorted and sometimes lies inserted in place of truths. Such movies show little of the saints' families, and the great suffering they endured. Brother Sun, Sister Moon is no exception.

While I like the music, comparing this to the movie Francis of Asissi with Bradford Dillman, I begin to wonder just who the main characters in the saint's life really were. In Brother Sun, Sister Moon - Paolo is a lawyer friend whereas in Francis of Asissi, he is a soldier friend. What is the truth? Sadly, even the many books on the saint cannot agree what the truth of the saint really is, making him more of a legend than a fact.

While the movie is well presented and the music is lovely and inspiring, I truly yearn for the truth of Francis and Clare, and would like know who their friends, family members, and first followers really were. This movie sadly only adds to my confusion.

Summary of Brother Sun, Sister Moon

A medieval italian wastrel becomes francis of assisi founder of an order under pope innocent iii. Studio: Paramount Home Video Release Date: 03/09/2004 Starring: Graham Faulkner Alec Guinness Run time: 121 minutes Rating: Pg Director: Franco Zeffirelli
It seemed like a good idea in 1973: a musical scored by Donovan about the life and times of St. Francis of Assisi, the passionate ascetic who expressed love for God by loving nature. But the finished product was something else. Filmmaker Franco Zeffirelli (Endless Love) makes a decorous effort at communicating the ideals of Francis and even tweaking the character toward flower-power relevance. But the result is feel-good fluff, a boring movie that doesn't penetrate its subject as much as reinvent him toward a modern bias. Graham Faulkner is entirely forgettable in the lead, and Donovan's songs on this project aren't exactly first-rate, either. --Tom Keogh
