Movie Reviews of Brother Bear 2Movie Review: This movie made me sad... Summary: 1 Stars
I remember when the first movie came out. I watched it and cried at the beauty of brotherly love that was portayed. For me, the strength of Brother Bear was just that - the true meaning of brotherhood. When Kenai's older brother died, I bawled. The music by Phil Collins stuck in my head for years.
This sequel is just... sad. It made me sad because the whole message that made the first movie so wonderful is completely gone - Kenai's brother, such a central character in the first movie, doesn't even make an appearance. The whole lovey-dovey thing just didn't sit well with me. If it had been hinted at in the first movie, maybe I would have believed it. But the first wasn't romantic at all in that sense. For that, it was unique in a long string of Disney movies that have had at least a sprinkling of romance in them.
And as for the plot - uggh. One scene near the end reminded me of Beauty and the Beast, which is one of my favourite Disney movies of all time. But it didn't work in this sequel, which went from humour to seriousness to overdramatic corniness.
Basically, the spirit of the bear - of brotherhood - that was in the first movie completely abandoned the second. I was hoping for the eagle-brother's appearance as a guardian even, but nope.
It's like separating brothers that have been together since birth, and replacing one with a girl and saying to the one that remains, "FALL in LOVE with HER!" Awkward, messy, and... I'm making myself depressed while I write this.
Just very sad.
