Movie Reviews of Broken WingsMovie Review: Family torn apart by tragedy. Summary: 4 Stars
Nine short months after the sudden death of the father the Ulman family psychologically resides in the deep crevices of pain, sorrow and mourning. Juggling her job as a midwife and taking care of her four children Dafna has barely enough time or opportunity to grieve. Each child is also struggling in their own manner with their father's death that has threatened to break apart the bonds of their family.
This film is beautiful and realistic in the manner of how each character's pain is portrayed. Even though they reside under the same roof each is dealing with their own sphere of remorse. I was greatly moved by the grief that they endured. The father's death itself is rarely mentioned and the exact details of the tragedy are not revealed until towards the end.
Although this film is set in the port city of Haifa, Israel there were no mention of politics, which was quite strange since it seems that everything I hear or see concerning Israel is associated with world political affairs. For this reason alone I found this film to be refreshing as it showed the lives of "normal" Israelis away from the newspaper headlines. Recommended.
Movie Review: Impressive Summary: 4 Stars
A father who died of an freak accident and the aftermath of that was a family that was torn apart by its sheer inability to deal with his demise. Perhaps, the grieving process had never taken place. The single mother was working overtime in the ER to sustain the livelihood of the movie, the eldest daughter who had to forgo her dream to become an accomplished song writer and a singer to look after her younger siblings, the brother who hid himself behind a mouse costume to distribute phamplets around the subway when he used to be an accomplished student and a basketball player at school, a younger brother who had this obsession of videoing himself jumping into an empty swimming pool & a little sister who was craving for attention from her mum who is hardly at home. Yet, another freak accident compelled them to reflect about lives and somehow, reconciled the dysfunctional family into one unit once again. Powerful and touching and an indie movie that shall not be missed.
Movie Review: Strong, realistic film, not in the Hollywood mode Summary: 4 Stars
Very good film. This won't work for you if you've grown up entirely on Hollywood flavored films. The actors in this look and seem like real people. They're as flawed as their characters, as confused and often contradictory. But that's why this is so good. It really does feel like you're watching real people stumblingly try to deal with suffering and loss. Not a light film, but it is ultimately uplifting. And I appreciated that the filmaker respects the intelligence of the audience. This isn't a film that holds your hand and tells you exactly what to think. It requires that you be a grown up viewer - or a realistic adolescent dealing with issues of family, relationship, angst and sex. It's also nice to have a glimpse into Israeli life that has nothing to do with politics.
Movie Review: Teenage angst and a mother's grief Summary: 4 Stars
This film is the story of a family trying to come to grips with the death of the father/husband. The children are gifted, the mother is exhausted, and each family member is struggling with his/her own attempt to recover from the death of their husband and father several months earlier.
The family's four children have to look out for each other; the heaviest burden falls on the older girl, who is a songwriter who has just been discovered by a recording company. It's a nice story and an interesting view into ordinary Israeli life. Set in modern Haifa, the film will interest those who like psychological drama and Israeli films in general. You won't waste your money on this film; while not superlative, it is well done and satisfying.
Movie Review: How Grief Is Mediated Summary: 4 Stars
A fascinating film that cuts from person to person as they act out their responses to the sudden death of the father. He makes the briest of appearance, from behind, in a home movie, mock-acting a basketball [play with his boys in the loungeroom of their small apartment. The acting is wonderful as is the scripting. And the humour that counterpoints the severity of tone, perfectly timed. The retracted star from an otherwise brilliant film, is for the rather mundane cinematography, though the claustrophobic atmosphere created, seemed appropriate.
