Movie Reviews of Broken (Unrated)Movie Review: Extreme and Demented! Just the Way I Like Them Summary: 5 Stars
By now you must believe that I'm demented or something. Good assumption. I work at it...by watching such horrific films as "BROKEN". Now this one is definitely not for the squeamish and it lives up to its billing..."Broken makes Saw look like a children's film." I concur. This one is
But I must admit, I have never been more frustrated with the "kindness" of a female star in a vengefeul film than the one in this shocker. I think I'm garnering a passing grade in Demented 101, only because the leading lady had a perfect opportunity to slice and dice the psychotic bozo in this film and she didn't have the bal...s (if you get my drift). Maybe that's why they call them women.
Trust me, I've met many aggressive women in my life (married three of them)...maybe that's my homework assignment in Demented 101???? Duh!
I know I will pass the class after this flick. I found myself jumping out of my seat during the peek of action shouting..."YOU DESERVE TO DIE!" Don't hold it against me. She did. Good job director and producer. My mentor would be proud of you - Quentin Tarantino.
This is a horror fans fantasy...a prerequisite to Intermediate Demented...on the road to Advanced Demented.
Maybe when I get my Ph.D the ladies in these films will no longer trust men. That'll be my thesis. A TEN...A SOLID FIVE!
Movie Review: Survivor Type... Summary: 5 Stars
BROKEN is a brilliant movie. Made on an extremely low budget, it looks as good as / better than most of what is cranked out today. The story is simple and agonizingly well realized. However, this is about more than just a maniacal captor (Eric Colvin) and the treatment of his captive, named Hope (Nadja Brand). This is about the undying love of a mother for her daughter, and the incredible ordeals she will endure in hopes of seeing her child again. We are put in the chains and subjugated along with mum, never knowing what new horror might come next. My favorite part is when Hope finds a flower. It is the only beauty in an otherwise blighted environment. The man destroys the flower once, but Hope will not allow him to do it a second time. When another young woman is brought into the desolate camp, things get even more interesting, as she is the innocent, new fish to Hope's more hardened, experienced victim. This allows for terrifying brutality, as well as the only brief moment of humor (the potato incident). BROKEN is not for anyone who must have a happy ending at all cost. I myself am no fan of the end of this movie, as it is the final, heart-destroying insult. Still, The Hope character is so well-defined and lived by Brand that I can't give this movie less than five stars...
Movie Review: make sure to get the UNRATED version Summary: 5 Stars
Amazing horror filmmaking on a shoestring budget. I absolutely disagree with the "reviewer" who gave this superbly shot, directed, edited and scored near-masterpiece only two stars.
What is further astonishing about this incredible cinema acomplishment is that it was shot on DV for next-to-no money. A nail-biter every step of the way. The ending will leave you stunned.
The extras are excellent. Kudos to all involved, especially the writer/directors Adam Mason and Simon Boyes.
And to the male lead, Eric Colvin, all I can say is: Sir, your performance chills to the bone.
RE: Commentary. This film deserves far better. Loud church bells can be heard throughout and this makes it difficult to pay attention to what the directors have to say.
On the other hand, the Making of Doc. tells you plenty, almost more than you care to know. Q & A with lead female (Nadja Brand) is fun and informative.
Also, the box the DVD came in is cleverly designed.
A job well done.
Movie Review: Like nothing I have ever seen before...(Unrated version) Summary: 5 Stars
I have seen many a horror film in my close to 50yrs. Some good, a lot bad.
"Broken" is like nothing I have ever seen before. This stayed with me for a very long time. Based on a true story, as it states. OK, maybe it's not true ...but it sure could be.
To those people who gave it a bad review here at Amazon, not sure what you saw (a cut up version you rented from Blockbuster, maybe?) but this is at the top of my list, for sure.
Although it has some of the most grotesque scenes I've ever seen, very hard for me to classify it to the horror genre.
Again, like nothing I have ever seen before.
It just goes to show...the real monsters are human.
Movie Review: wanna go camping Summary: 5 Stars
i have been watching a ton of horror flicks recently (all the SAW's, HOSTEL, the AUDITION)... and this one got me good. i really like the sustained undercurrent of evil tension and fear throughout the entire movie. perhaps it is the fact that the bad guy has moments of "could you call it" appreciation for his victims... but you know at any moment he could really mess them up.
BROKEN has it all... good acting, intense suffering, soul murdering... and it is very realistic -- that is the scariest part. the brutal scenes are well timed and effective, nothing over-the-top. i recommend it to anyone who wants an intense rush... and is not expecting a happy ending.
