Movie Reviews of Broken FlowersMovie Review: A lazy review for us lazy Bill Murray fans Summary: 5 Stars
I don't understand how people can write (or read) these reviews that are basically college thesis'. Anyway, if you loved "Lost in Translation" and the subtle performance of Dr.Venkman in said movie, I can't imagine you not loving this as well. Great story, and honestly, I probably wouldn't care as much (and neither would 95% of the other people who saw this) if the guy from "Meatballs" wasn't in it. While this movie seems to infuriate some with it's "slow" pace, I really hadn't noticed-I found it very relaxing to travel with Bill "Baby Ruth" Murray through middle America in rental cars. Of course, we can't forget to mention the uber-hip director with the uber-hip hairstyle, Mr.Jarmusch. Is that how you spell his name? Well, this guy has been making movies that appeal to the largely unused portion of our brains for quite some time, and I would recommend checking out his other stuff...maybe between viewings of Van Damme classics such as "Bloodsport" and "Time Cop".
Movie Review: Funny how fate plays tricks on us....that way Summary: 5 Stars
Another installment in Bill Murray's "existentialist" phase, or, you could call it his "dead pan" phase.
I didn't really "get" Lost in Translation. "The life aquatic" was an exercise in surrealism and a spoof on Jacques Cousteau, and there wasn't really anything to "get" in that movie, but Life Aquatic is funnier and more light hearted than Broken Flowers.
This movie is really about the unseen forces connecting the past and present. Jung called it synchronicity. In "American Beauty", it was that plastic bag floating upward, seemingly having a life of its own.
Don Johnston's journey is riddled with seemingly connected clues, but in the end, he doesn't find the answer. Or does he?
This is the type of movie that will rverberate in the back of your mind.
Does the movie (and dare I say life itself?) have a meaning? Maybe. Maybe not. But it's a magic trip.
Movie Review: Much better than Lost in Translation Summary: 5 Stars
I've alaways been a big Bill Murray fan, Ghostbusters, Rushmore, Groundhog Day, Kingpin, Caddyshack, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Ed Wood and now Broken Flowers rate as some of his best performances to date. After the disappointing Lost in Translation which was praised as if it had been blessed by the buddha himself by every single critic under the sun, I wasn't sure if this was going to be another overrated, over hyped boring snoozer too. This one turned out to be a fresh highly original and beautifully acted film, equal parts humor and dramatic narrative, a movie with a heart and a brain. Bill Murray is in peak form here. Bill Murray has the ability that many actors whose primary income was based on comedic talents to switch effectivly between serious and tongue in cheeck hilarious with a blink of the eye. Highly recommended film. Funny, touching and tragic at times, a quality film that I wish we saw more of.
Movie Review: You're looking for something pink and a typewriter... Summary: 5 Stars
Imagine being a man who gets a letter announcing that he fathered a son around 20 years ago and said son is probably looking for him now. Problem? The letter isn't signed and well, it could be from several women. Oh and a nosy well meaning neighbor/friend is convinced that you must know which of those women is the mother before the boy shows up on your doorstep, so he books the flights for you to go try to figure out which one it is. Of course you cannot just ask them as that'd be silly. So he's decided your course of action for you - look for something pink and a typewriter given the stationery / letter that you received.
That is the story of Don Johnston in Broken Flowers. As he travels along trying to figure out which of the women could have sent him this letter he sees just how much their lives have changed and as he returns home we discover how much he's learned and has yet to learn.
Movie Review: Embarking on a journey of past Summary: 5 Stars
Very few, infact very few films are genuine, bold and just engaging enough to fill your eyes and glue them to the screen. 'Broken flowers' is one of those films. You get the initial impression that the charecters you witness on screen, are genuine, realistic and so are the situations. Bill Murray plays the charecter called Don and you are forced to think from Don's point of view, from his eyes. Bill Murray is almost perfect in his role and makes you think what would it be like to be in Don's shoes. Its the story about Don, his present and then certain things that introduce us to some of his old aqcuaintances, takes him and us to a journey to his past. Its truely a beautiful piece of cinema, very genuine and Bill Murray steals the show easily. Watch out for Tilda Swinton, her role is brief but her performence is just beyond words. A silent drama not to be missed at all. I am happy to own the dvd.
