Movie Reviews of Broadway's Lost Treasures Collection (Broadway's Lost Treasures 1-3 & The Best of the Tony Awards - The Plays)

Movie Review: This Treasure Chest is a Pleasure to Open Time and Again
Summary: 5 Stars

What a joy and what an opportunity. For newer generations of Broadway fans who never got to see the legendary performances that are still classics today, here is the key. This beautiful 80-minute retrospective is a wonderful treat, featuring 20 classic performances from some of the most beloved shows ever featured on Broadway.

There is something for everyone here. The performances are sensational, and they bring the music of the shows to life more vividly than the newer generations could have imagined them. There is the fiery Patti LuPone, as the eternal opportunist Patti LuPone, blazing through "A New Argentina" from her star-making vehicle, "Evita," amply supported by Mandy Patinkin's Che Guevara and Bob Gunton's Juan Peron. Angela Lansbury, the most honored actress of the Broadway musical, in her Tony-winning performance as Nellie Lovett from "Sweeney Todd" with the delicious number, "The Worst Pies in London." And there is a glorious Carol Channing, radiating charm and buoyancy as the unforgettable Dolly Levi, singing "Before the Parade Passes By." Glamorous Julie Andrews, not in the original cast of "A Little Night Music," but who is nothing short of spellbinding singing "Send in the Clowns" to a piano accompaniment. Zero Mostel, rollicking his merry way through the classic "If I Were a Rich Man" from "Fiddler on the Roof." Yul Brynner, in one of his final performances as the King of Siam, waltzing with Patricia Morrison to "Shall We Dance?" Joel Grey as the unforgettable Master of Ceremonies of "Cabaret," leading the spirited company of the Kit Kat Club in "Wilkommen." Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera high-kicking their way through a "Chicago" medley. Jerry Orbach singing and hoofing through the unperishable "Lullaby of Broadway" from "42nd Street."

There are the beloved MGM veterans Ann Miller and Mickey Rooney hoofing through a number from "Sugar Babies" in their sixties with twice the verve of most performers in their twenties. Bonnie Franklin and company singing, dancing, acting, juggling, flying, and whirling through the sensational title number of "Applause." And there is a final classic to wrap up this joyride: Andrea McArdle, Dorothy Loudon, and company in a medley from the children's favorite "Annie."

A great viewing experience for the whola family, "Broadway's Lost Treasures" is a delightful festival of music and dance that will exhilarate both young and old alike. For a night of fun in the theater at home, "Broadway's Lost Treasures" is your best ticket.

Movie Review: It was seeing a Broadway festival in my living room!
Summary: 5 Stars

I really enjoyed this DVD, mainly because it introduced me to some musicals I'd never heardof, and it let me view footage of performances that I had heard of but had been performed before my time. I was exited to see Chita Rivera and Gwen Verdon doing a medly from Chicago, my favorite musical. I had heard them on the original cast album but had never dreamed if seeing them perform it! I also enjoyed "If I Were a Rich Man" from Fiddler on the Roof, which is the soring musical my school is doing thic year. I loved the movie Cabaret and really enjoyed seeing Joel Grey performing this as it had been done on Broadway, quite different from the movie's rendition of "Willkommen". I also enjoyed, for possibly the first time, "Tomorrow" from Annie, because that was the first "good-sounding" version I've heard, it wasn't as nasally as the versions in the movies. Overall, this DVD gave me a Broadway experience that I may never get to see. Plus, I like seeing things done by the originals.

Movie Review: A rip-off
Summary: 1 Stars

Read all the reviews, got throroughly familiar with this DVD before spending my money ($21) on it, then rented it for a test-drive just in case. Thank god I rented it. Knew (I thought) all the bad stuff, at least 2 songs lip-synched (one of them from a Sondheim thing, planned to skip over that garbage anyway), Julie Andrews instead of Glynis Johns singing the other Sondheim thing (Sondheim's one and only good song, and it just a series of triads) and John Raitt's number shortened (oh well, have the OBC album, saw the movie, disappointing but not devastating). Brushed my teeth, showered, settled back and turned it on. First there's Angela Lansbury telling me what a truly glorious show I'm about to see, telling me how great Hammerstein and Sondheim are (that's her opinion, want mine?), then Vivian Blaine live and not on wax singing her wonderful "Adelaide's Lament." Delicious from the first sneeze. Okay. She sang about a third of the song, hokey, except for the sniffles totally our of character, and she ended (off key?) on the wrong note flinging her arms out in true Broadwayesque (but NOT Runyonesque) style. Forget it. I advise anyone interested in this thing to RENT IT FIRST, unless you're rich and don't care how you spend your money. I shut it off in complete disappointment and incredulous disgust after Adelaide. "What a mess!" as a female tough guy in the military with the heart of a rattler said to me when in a state of terror and confusion at the induction center I screwed up filling out a form!

Movie Review: Great Broadway DVD!
Summary: 5 Stars

I got a lot of enjoyment while watching Broadway's Lost Treasures. This is a must for any theater lover's DVD or video collection.

Movie Review: Clarity a Problem
Summary: 3 Stars

First, I would give the DVD a 5 star rating for the opportunity to see all those broadway numbers with most of the original casts. That is a treat, and something to treasure. But I gave it a three star rating, as it was so blurry, especially if you have a large television. Watching it on a smaller tv makes it clearer. Therefore, my question, is why was it not redigitized. I did not realize that some of the songs were lip-synched, until I read the earlier reviews. Seeing Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera together was a true treat. Hope they make more of these DVD's, but please spend the money and digitize them
