Movie Reviews of Broadway Danny RoseMovie Review: A treat for Woody's fans Summary: 4 Stars
Fans of Woody Allen are sure to enjoy the comedy, "Broadway Danny Rose." He plays Danny, a third-rate manager of has-been performers, including Lou, a washed-up singer who may be making a comeback. Lou wants his girlfriend to come to his big show (without his wife knowing), so he asks Danny to bring her. Danny and Tina (Mia Farrow) end up spending a frenetic day together running from hit men.
This movie is basically an eighty-four minute monologue by Allen doing his typical fast-talking-schmoozer routine. The dialogue is fast and funny and Allen is, well, Allen. Mia Farrow is almost unrecognizable as a cheap bimbo and does a good job playing against type, but the spotlight is on Woody all the way. Filmed in black and white in cinema-verite style on the streets of New York, this is vintage Woody Allen with non-stop one-liners and show-biz jokes.

Movie Review: Woody Lite Summary: 4 Stars
Broadway Danny Rose feels like a love letter from Woody to all the guys who never made it to the heights that he has achieved. He succeeds in making us root for the little guy. It's like Rocky for the Vaudeville set. I call it a "minor" classic because unlike some of Woody's other later films, this one does not seek to ask or answer any of life's great quandaries. It's just seeks to entertain and may be his most light harted fare since Play it again, Sam (Alice was pretty lightweight too, but not one of my favorites). So if you're looking for a movie that'll just make you laugh, this one is highly recommended. If however you're looking for a Woody Allen movie with more substance, Crimes and Misdemeanors or Husbands and Wives might be more your speed. And for Woody at his absolute best, try Manhattan or Hannah and her Sisters, both are 5 star movies.
Movie Review: Class Summary: 4 Stars
This isn't quite up there with Annie Hall and Manhattan. However, its in my top 10 Woody Allen films and that means its better than 95% of the rubbish being churned out by Hollywood.
Woody plays Danny Rose theatrical agent to some frankly weird acts.
His most talented act is Lou Canova (a Tony Bennett like character) who is just starting to make it big again. Theres some dodgy Italian mob involvement via Mia Farrow (Canovas girlfriend) resulting in a funny sequence involing helium.
Needless to say this is brilliantly written and the Barney Dunn story has an element of pathos that will surprise a few people. However, if you have seen Manhattan you will already know that there is more to Woody than meets the eye.
Movie Review: Meet This Broadway Bloke (3.5 stars) Summary: 4 Stars
"Broadway Danny Rose" is just a slightly weaker film than the sum of its parts. Accessible, bittersweet and nostalgic, the movie features one of Allen's best acting performances, the great Mia Farrow cast (and dressed) against type, some wonderful gags (mostly spoken ones) and the great B&W camera. What falls behind a bit is the story itself, which shows gaps in motivation of characters and is not enthralling the way it should be -- it's a bit banal. (That's not to say it's bad, though.) Although not as complete a movie as "Hannah", "Annie" or "Purple Rose of Cairo" (my three top Allen flicks), it's still a nice way to pass time. And if you like Woody, go definitely for it.
Movie Review: An overlooked classic Summary: 4 Stars
This gentle and affectionate comedy is full of genuine warmth, something Woody's work does not always have.Sandy Baron narrates the story of Danny Rose, a likeable but blundering Broadway agent whose acts include a blind xylophone-player and a balloon-folder. Danny emerges as a hero-figure who stands up for the little guys and makes a difference in his own way, including in the life of a barely recognizable Mia Farrow. Witty, surreal and engaging, Broadway Danny Rose is a minor classic in the Allen canon, and not one to be glanced over.
