Movie Reviews of Broadway Danny RoseMovie Review: One of Allen's best Summary: 5 Stars
An agent (Woody Allen) who handles acts who can't get representation anywhere else hits gold with a washed up lounge singer (Nick Apollo Forte) who seems poised for a comeback. Unfortunately, a lot of baggage comes with him, particularly a temperamental mistress with Mafia connections (Mia Farrow).
This is one of Woody Allen's "small" pictures, but also one of his best. It seems like more of a plot-driven farce than some of his weightier meditations on mortality and the human heart, but this can be deceiving. Danny Rose's absolute commitment to loyalty may get him kicked around by life, but it also leads him to something more important than success. Most importantly, it is consistently funny.
Movie Review: A must see film Summary: 5 Stars
An over the hill lounge singer named Lou Canova, a one legged tap dancer, Barney Dunne the worst puppeteer ever, Herbie Jason's birds that peck out tunes on the piano, two balloon folders, an iodine drinking poet, the Thanksgiving Macy Day's parade, Milton Berle, the Carnegie Deli, mafia mistress Tina Vitale, Joe Franklin and of course the most sincere, loser of a manger Danny Rose... Woody Allen ties these disparaging elements into one of his most circular, touching, hilarious, and memorable films. It's just brilliantly done. Completely solidifies Woody as one of the greatest American screen writer, director, actors of all time. Star, smile, strong indeed!
Movie Review: My sentimental favorite Summary: 5 Stars
I don't know about other Allen fans, but it's hard for me to pick just one favorite. I have a critical favorite which is Crimes and Misdemeanors but I really have a soft spot for my sentimental favorite Broadway Danny Rose. You can't help but love and really pull for Danny, he gives everything he's got for his acts. Mia Farrow just chews up the scenery as Tina. Wonderful characters, a brilliant script, and just a great heart warming story. At our house Danny is one of our Thanksgiving day traditions. It wouldn't be the same without Danny and Tina. A lot easier to digest than football.
Movie Review: Caricature of a two-bit talent agent Summary: 5 Stars
Danny Rose is the caricature of a endearingly bad talent agent, who brings to mind every back office anyone (myself included) has ventured into in NY hoping for a chance at fame. From his clothes to his gestures to his phraseology, Woody characterizes the part to a T, without ever becoming far-fetched. Mia as the delightful ditz is hilariously grating and the rest of the cast reminds me of 1/2 of my neighbors in Brooklyn. There are classic scenes in here that still come across as original almost 20 years later. Maybe New York hasn't changed as much as I thought?
