Movie Review: If You Have A Pulse, You'll Enjoy This!

Quite simply put, regardless of what genre of music you normally listen to, this criminally overlooked gem will most assuredly make you an instant fan of Brian Setzer Orchestra and put you in the holiday mood with a dance in your step. I picked this up a few years back on the recommendation of some friends who had attended a BSO Christmas show and absolutely raved about how great it was. Being more of a fan of the harder edged Trans-Siberian Orchestra sound, I wasn't sure how much I'd enjoy this, but I decided to give it a shot and I was absolutely hooked to the point of dancing around my living room with the very first viewing. This has become my all-time favorite holiday music DVD and I'd easily rank it among the top 10 music DVDs/Blu-Rays I own overall.
I became such a huge fan of this DVD from first listen that I bought copies for my entire family the Christmas it came out and every single person has loved it to the point of making the DVD a holiday tradition to watch. I have yet to play this for anyone new to BSO and had someone not immediately love it. I generally preface my throwing this in for the uninitiated with "if you have a pulse, you'll enjoy this" and I've been told on numerous occasions that this description is quite appropriate.
Setzer is easily one of the most likable and charismatic frontmen out there and the feverish energy and enthusiasm coming from him and the entire band throughout this performance is simply contagious even from watching it on your TV. The band roar through several Christmas favorites done in their unique big band style fueled by Setzer's retro-rockin' Gretsch guitar sound and high energy vocal delivery. They even do one of the most unique instrumental takes on "The Nutcracker Suite" you'll ever hear. Their rendition has quickly become a favorite of mine. In addition to the overall Christmas theme, they also include a couple of BSO favorites including "This Cat's on a Hot Tin Roof," "Dirty Boogie," "Caravan," "Pipeline," "Jump, Jive An' Wail," "Stray Cat Strut," "Fishnet Stockings," "Rumble in Brighton," and a mindblowing rendition of "Rock this Town" (the transition from a 2 piece jam session interlude mid-set back to full orchestra in the middle of this song is just pure magic). The DVD also has some very entertaining special features including rehearsal footage and the ability to immediately jump from the action onstage to what's going on backstage at a couple of points during regular playback. Overall, this DVD is quite simply pure holiday musical bliss with a sound that will get you in the spirit and make you want to move your feet. Highly recommended for anyone and everyone!
