Movie Reviews of BrazilMovie Review: Odd Movie Summary: 5 Stars
When this originally came out way back when, it was before its time. I do not remember how many times I paid to see it in the theaters. Now I have added it to my collection. I have always enjoyed the art of the film. When it came out, I really did not grasp the story it was telling. Now that I am older, I see the direction this film was going in, because we are not too far behind it now. I have no idea why this was titled Brazil because it has nothing to do with Brazil. The movie is about a big socialist government, into your business all the time. You are told how to act, dress, live and work. I like this movie because even though we are faced with big brother watching us, you cannot take away the desire for freedom and individualism.
Movie Review: Wait for the Criterion Edition Summary: 5 Stars
Brazil is an amazing movie, but for the real fans, the Creiterion Edition comes out on June 29th. It is three discs. The first is Terry Gilliam's cut of the movie (142 mins)with his commentary track as well. The second disc includes interviews, storyboards, featurette, and the famous "Battle for Brazil" documentary, etc. The third disc is the "Love Conquers All" (97 min) version of the film. It has a commentary by a newspaper reporter, comparing the cuts of the film.So while owning this movie is essential for any serious fan, if you want the real Brazil, as well as Gilliam's own thoughts and the history of the film (the controversy, etc.), wait for the Criterion Edition. 3 Discs, June 29, 1999.
Movie Review: Terrifying, but Hilarious. Summary: 5 Stars
Brazil is a scary, scary vision of the modern world (Perhaps most scary is that most of the reviews here seem to think that it takes place in the "near future." The movie clearly states its temporal setting to be "Somewhere in the 20th Century," and Gilliam has claimed that the look of the movie was meant to be as if the entire century had been compressed into a single moment. That we do not recognize the frightening elements in our current world is quite telling.) The visuals, some amazing lines, and the wonderfully ambiguous ending (not to mention the Sam-as-Jesus theme) combine to make this movie a modern classic. See it. See it again. Discuss it. Fight your own samurais.
Movie Review: A Breathtaking, Overlooked, Original Fantasy Worth Six Stars Summary: 5 Stars
Cast aside what you have come to expect from a full length major motion picture, and sit back and enjoy one of the most fascinating, completely off the wall science-fiction/fanstasy ever to grace the industry...well, almost. "Brazil" may not satisfy the typical film goer, but I found it fresh and clever, and enjoyably dark and gritty. Few movies in recent years have come close to the dark drama "Blade Runner", with Harrison Ford, and though "Brazil" is a humorous spin on a dreadful future, it certainly deserves to share the same creative umbrella. If you enjoyed "The Matrix" or "Gattica", then "Brazil" is certainly for you.
Movie Review: masterpiece Summary: 5 Stars
Sam Lowry's father (the ghost in the machine) has created a world that ultimately sacrifices his own son. The only wound that appears on Sam at the end is a hole in his hand. Crucifixtion anyone?? There are so many levels to this movie. I love that there are film makers like Gilliam who can make me think and feel at the same time. You can tell that the people who don't like this film just don't get it.... and you know, some people never will but that's who they make the other 99% of the movies for. I came on line tonite looking for the 5th Monkey starring Ben Kingsley and it's not even listed. Oh well, I guess every Segal movie will be available on DVD soon.
