Movie Reviews of BrazilMovie Review: I do not give 5 stars lightly. This is one of my 5 favorites Summary: 5 Stars
The ultimate anti-utopian film. Imagine "1984" on ecstasy. Buy this film, or the bigger boxed set with extras. But, GET IT SEE IT. (pant, pant, pant...) Okay, the executive summary: 1. Acting - DeNiro, Palin, Pryce, Helman, need I say more? Rocks. 2. Plot - A man who dares to dream seizes the chance to be a hero and earns his reward. Don't ask any more, see the film. 3. Directing / special effects / production design / etc - Amazing, gothic-comic. Gilliam at the top of his game. Executive summary: Read my reviews of other films. I never say "buy this now" to everyone. This is the exception - it is accessible to anyone who has two grey cells and a neuron or two, but it is far from simplistic. Not a first date movie, but if your date sees it and hates it, dump them like a hot brick, for you are dating a soulless, dead thing. Don't read the other reviews for plot info - buy this DVD and watch it. Seriously - you, you there, who is thinking "gee, I don't know..." - BUY IT. Trust me. It'll open your mind.
Movie Review: An original masterpiece Summary: 5 Stars
This movie is how I wished books were translated on film. The story is engrossing, and you catch something new every time you read it, er, uh, watch it. This is the only movie that makes me feel good about life, even though life itself is not portrayed to be something attainable in this movie. The wonder, the dialogue, the atmosphere, and the characters all meld together in a haunting sci-fi vision that cannot be copied by mainsteam storytelling, and leaves you wondering if "Brazil" is a place not too far away. I can see how some critics originally panned this movie. I'm sure that after a second, or even a tenth viewing, they will walk away with a different attitude. I myself was confused as hell the first time I saw it, but I couldn't deny that it may me "try" to understand. It's those type of movies that you have to see again to fully "get it". I can't believe that this movie isn't among the ranks of true masterpieces.
Movie Review: This is one of the best films ever made. Summary: 5 Stars
Brazil is the film that many consider the highlight of director Terry Gilliam's carreer. It is about an average joe named Sam Lowery who is lost in a drab world of buisness and proceedures. To escape this world he often dreams. In his dreams he seeks the woman of his dreams, whom he later discovers is a real person. He persues her but runs into constant setbacks. This version is especially worth having because, even though unadvertised and unmarked on the case, this is the original version released in Europe. The version released in the U.S. was about ten minutes shorter (so is the home video.) For a fan, the extra ten minutes are a real plus if you don't feel like shelling out the $200 for the Critereon Laderdisc version. The tranlation is also visulally excellent. The picture is incredibly clear (especially compared to my old video version.) I'm glad this one came out.
Movie Review: Food for thought, and laughs (albeit some very grim ones...) Summary: 5 Stars
One thing you can be sure of, when seeing a Terry Gilliam movie: beautiful art direction, complex and dark sets, tongue in cheek humour, often in the details. A bewildering strain of events in an ever more intrigueing story. See how Sam Lowry, a humble but efficient public servant, tries to find the woman he's fallen in love with in the maze of a Kafka-esque and 1984-like society. Deeply unsettling notions of Big Brother government style are mixed with hilarious scenes ("there was a slight complication of the complication"). And finally, it's a very moving story too: just like a modern Oedipus, Sam Lowry only wants to do good and thereby conjures up the demons of doom to ruin and destroy his own life and that of others. One of the best movies ever - because it's dramatic, hilarious, well shot, impressive, thought provoking. And still it's great entertainment.
Movie Review: A Creative Dark Humor Adaptation of Orwell's '1984' Summary: 5 Stars
The movie is Monty Python star Terry Gilliam's finest work. An adaptation of Orwell's classic political satire "1984" starring Jonathan Pryce and Robert De Niro.
The movie follows the same dominant theme and plot structure of 1984 but adds a little more light humor to the story. Just as in "1984", society is controlled by a totalitarian state and all modes of subversion are suppressed. The movie is perhaps less focused on the communist overtones in Orwell's novel and shows more of a fascistic state. The images are surreal and follow the main character's desire to escape and/or revolt against social conformity and bureaucratic convention.
I liked this movie a lot more than the the movie "1984" starring Richard Burton. The theme here is a little more jovial and comical but still sends the same message as its gloomier counterpart.
