Movie Reviews of Branford Marsalis Quartet: Coltrane's A Love Supreme Live in AmsterdamMovie Review: Perfect Summary: 5 Stars
To the dudes who gave this 1 star - what were you thinking?!?!?!
This is Branford at the height of his powers with a superb group. Jeff 'Tain' Watts really stands out too. As for sound and video quality it is excellent, better by far than most music dvds. And it comes with a cd so you can hear the music without the dvd - now that's thoughtful.
The only problem for me is I wanted more :)
Movie Review: Fully worthy of Coltrane and ALS Summary: 5 Stars
Wow. This thing is a wonder. Great performance by four very fine musicians; pristine audio; and a warm and immediate video that--and I'm sorry for this--makes you feel like you're right there. Loaded with really enjoyable extras. You can't go wrong with this.
This is the first time in a long time that a DVD makes me want to actually own a big HDTV and some high-end audio gear.
Movie Review: coltrane is not dead! Summary: 5 Stars
is this better then the real Coltrane?
Close your eyes and experience that Coltrane is back and how!
Movie Review: It is what it is....... Summary: 4 Stars
......meaning Branford Marsalis & not John Coltrane playing Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" so people who want or expect to hear a Coltrane-esque performance are apt to be disappointed. As the musicians point out in the interviews, they were at pains to respect but not copy Trane. As for me (someone who finds Coltrane pretty hard to get into but a fan of BF), I thought this was a great way to SEE Branford whilst listening to JC's work. SO, my thoughts are that the band is great (Calderazzo seemed a bit stiff at first but definitely "warmed up" by section 3; the bass player who I'd never heard of before was great - nice tone(!) & Tain was excellent as always). Branford was also fine although I take the point made by another reviewer that he doesn't seem to really extend himself which is a bit of a shame. As for the music, overall I was pleasantly surprised - I thought the first 3 sections had a lot of swing & lots of space for all the musicians to shine & also some reasonable variations of tempo & dynamic. However, whether it's in the writing or Branford's saxophone work but section 4 became way too repetitive for me & didn't really build to any major climax or statement - hence only 4 stars overall.
Final note for would-be purchasers: The performance of A Love Supreme lasts for some 48 minutes; the rest of the dvd is taken up with interviews. The package includes a (different) live cd performance of the work.
Movie Review: What a fitting reprise Summary: 4 Stars
What a fitting reprise of JC' monumental work! No doubt Brandford Marsalis and his quintent feel the love supreme. The playing is outstanding, the passion they feel is visible throughout the journey in this recording. I would have loved to hear more comments from the players. Joey is his usual animated player on the chair, I like his style. The drummer and the bassist both are passionate on this set. This is a good recording and money well spent.
