Movie Reviews of Boyz 'N The Hood

Movie Review: Beautiful and Educational
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an emotional, educational, smart, and realistic movie about one of America¡¯s biggest problems: poverty. For such a wealthy nation America has some serious poverty issues. This film highlights that in a way I have never seen before or after.

I wish more people watched this movie. It could do a lot of good. This is such an educational movie yet it rarely feels like it¡¯s preaching to you. The message is simple. There is too much poverty and thus violence in the ghetto. People just don¡¯t seem to care enough.

I will not mention the plot, see above for that, but must say that Cuba Gooding Junior and Lawrence Fishburne are excellent together. Also, Ice Cube does a great job as an actor, playing a key role. What I will say about the plot is that it is slow-building and then explosive for the last twenty minutes. What I also found interesting were the little scenes mixed in with the plot. There are some great side scenes, for example in one scene Furious (Fishburne) takes his son and his friend to Compton to tell them about gentrification and how people devalue property in the ghetto then buy it up cheap and sell it at a profit.

All in all this is a riveting movie that you must have in your collection.

Movie Review: More than crime
Summary: 5 Stars

This is not only a thrilling story on the life of a group of African Americans but it also captures the reality of the streets of L.A. As you watch the movie you see the life surrounding this group of black friends. You truly become attached to the characters and begin to feel that they cant do anything to escape the struggle they have been in since they were born. Ice Cube the main character plays a gangbanger who is living the life of a criminal, from fights on the corner, to drive by shootings.
This movie truly captures the struggle millions of African Americans go through. As we watch the kids grow up in the ghetto, to when they are old enough to get out, they still seem to be the same. Their customs dont change, simply because of their surrounding, guns, liquor, poverty, and crime. They have no other option than do join in.
When dough boy's(Ice Cube) brother Ricky is offered a scholarship to play college football it looks like a way to get out of the ghetto. The whole family feels as this a way for them to escape it also, so everyone is supporting him. Until a tragedy is brought upon the family. This story truly proves nothings good until finally out of the hood for these boys.

Movie Review: Best look at the hood to date
Summary: 5 Stars

Everyone I have talked to who has seen this movie says the same thing; "That was a really good movie!". It is much more. This movie came out of John Singleton's personal experiences with racism and crime in South Central, like Spike Lee with "Do the Right Thing". But this movie was one of the first of many urban-crime films to come (i.e. New Jack City, Juice, Menace II Society, Dead Presidents). Ice Cube, a rapper at the time, made his film debut as Doughboy, the drug dealer who does the most crime on the streets on South Central. Cuba Gooding, Jr. also made his debut as Tre, a man whose father (Laurence Fishburne) teaches him how to be responsible and making the right choices. The performances were great, The rare Soundtrack had cool songs like Cube's "South Central" song and this movie is best of many crime films, not like the gangster films though.

Singleton just put together the perfect movie to depict his old neighborhood, it's just a shame that none of his recent work is as good as Boyz N The Hood. If you are a fan of gangster films, or just good movies in general, you will like Boyz N The Hood.

Movie Review: Harsh Realities of South Central
Summary: 5 Stars

The critically acclaimed Oscar nominated 1991 release "Boyz 'N the Hood" wonderfully desplicts the harsh realities of living in South Central Los Angeles. It stars Cuba Gooding Jr., Ice Cube, Morris Chestnut, Lawrence Fishburne, and Angela Bassett. This wonderfully written plot explores the lives of three young men strugging with everyday living. Two of them, while struggling to stay lawful citizens, hold high hopes of leaving that neighborhood and pursue higher dreams. Little do they know that their actions affect the community and their families. This film never holds back on the harshness of the violence and the environment. Each character holds their own persona that makes this film more powerful. The actors perform their characters beautifully, especially Gooding and Fishburne. All express wonderfully the individual everyday struggles. Such tremendous film quality makes "Boyz 'N the Hood" worth watching. Other films with similar theme followed shortly after this release ("Menace II Society", "New Jack City"), but none surpass this one. Many audiences will feel its powerful message after viewing.
