Movie Reviews of Boyz 'N The Hood

Movie Review: One of the Most Powerful Films Ever.
Summary: 5 Stars

Boyz N the Hood was and still is one of the most powerful movies I've ever seen. Shot entirely in South Central LA to present the movie as realistic as possible. The movie debuted in theater back in 1991 and had an immediate impact on almost everyone who viewed it.

The story about 3 friends growing up in the hood in South Central LA. Each one with their own individual struggle and goals in life. Doughboy (Ice Cube) ,who is a drug dealer, has been in and out of trouble throughout his young life and seems to be happy with his surroundings. Doughboy's brother Ricky (Morris Chestnut) a teenage father with bright hopes and aspirations of becoming an NFL football player ; and Ricky's best friend Tre (Cuba Gooding Jr.) who hopes and dreams of higher education and an escape from the dwelling of the hood. "The Hood" where saying the wrong thing or looking at someone the wrong way can end in death. Tre's father (Larry Fishburne) is a responsible, educated and strict father who makes sure his son stays on the right track in achieving his goals in life. Teaching him about responsibility and keeping your cool in adverse situations in order to make a thoughtful descision. Tre's resolve will be tested when tragedy strikes close to home and revenge and murder seem like the only solution.

Fantastic direction by John Singleton and equally impressive acting by all characters are the reason Boyz N the Hood was such a huge success. It was nominated for two acedemy awards (Direction and Screenplay.) ... You have to see this one for yourself you won't be sorry.

Movie Review: Boyz II Men
Summary: 5 Stars

Boyz In The Hood was John Singleton's directorial debut. Only twenty-three at the time of the release, he crafted a gripping and revealing film about life in the gang-riddled, hard scrabble streets of South Central Los Angeles. The movie centers around Tre, played by Cuba Gooding, Jr. Tre lives with his father Furious (Laurence Fishburne), an Afro-centric businessman, who is constantly trying to instill a sense of pride in his son about his culture and his people as well as a respect for life and becoming a real man. Tre's best friend, Rick (Morris Chestnut), is a star football player being heavily recruited by colleges, but also has a young son. Rick's brother Dough Boy (Ice Cube in his acting debut) has just served jail time and is a drug dealer who hangs on his front porch drinking 40's and dealing. The movie is marked with violence as Mr. Singleton shows how on an average Friday night, gunfire can erupt and lives can be lost in an instant. Mr. Gooding shows signs of greatness as he portrays Tre with a naïve and quiet quality, Mr. Fishburne is commanding in his role, but it is Ice Cube who gives the best performance. With no prior acting experience, he is the heart and soul of the film. The scene at the end of the film where Dough Boy and Tre are discussing the state of the ghetto is powerful, moving and heart wrenching. Boyz In The Hood is Mr. Singleton's American Graffiti. Though it doesn't wax nostalgic like that film, it is Mr. Singleton's ode to his youth and neighborhood and it is a lasting and powerful film.

Movie Review: Haunting Inner City Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

It's been some time since I saw "Boyz 'N the Hood" but much of it has stayed with me. I was impressed by so many of the elelments that went into making this such an excellent movie; the acting, the directing, the writing, the editing, virtually everything. I'm just a fellow who grew up in Iowa and lives in North Dakota so I'm hardly one qualified to praise this film for its' realistic portrayal of inner city life. I don't know if this movie is "realistic" or not in that regard. However, I know that the writer and director had a message to convey and they conveyed it well.

"Boyz 'N the Hood" is about many things. It is about the challenge of raising a child in a one-parent home. It is about the senselessness of random, pointless violence. It is about the limited means of escaping the ghetto as a child growing up in it (and it does an excellent job of contrasting the dependability of education over sports). It is about the importance of having pride and respect for your self. There are so many messages on so many levels that it is hard to absorb them all in a single viewing. That is what is so impressive about this movie.

Although the movie shows us dead ends, violence, emptiness, failure, sorrow and despair, it leaves us with hope and an appreciation that that the straight and narrow road is still the best route to success no matter what the point of embarkation.

Movie Review: Some of you guys just don't get it!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was reading some of the reviews posted below, and was irritated when this movie was so often referred to as a "gang" movie. This isn't a movie about inner-city gangs, folks! The main characters, played by Cuba Gooding, Jr., and Lawrence Fishburne, and his friends Ricky and Doughboy (played by Ice Cube) are NOT gang members. They are simply poor, urban youths trying to make their lives the best they can.

I can totally relate to Lawrence Fishburne's character, Furious, who amid the turmoil and suffocating poverty and despair of the ghetto, is trying to build a business that will improve both his family life and the neighborhood, as well as trying to keep his son (Gooding) on the straight and narrow path. Fishburne's character reminded me so much of my own father.

I watched this movie in high school, and was blown away by the frankness of the story-telling. It was not overly embellished by tremendous acts of violence, as is the case in most Hollywood movies about the inner-city, nor does it try to ignore the ugliness present in everyday life in South-Central.

The most heart-wrenching aspect of this film was the murder of Ricky, the USC-bound football star, who was gunned down in the alley the day he received the SAT result that would have allowed him to pass through the door leading out of the hopelessness of the ghetto.

Movie Review: Boyz 'N the Hood
Summary: 5 Stars

Boyz'N the hood is a very memorable movie, remember watching it when it first came out, recently I decided to add it to my DVD collection. Actors Cuban Gooding J.R. (Trey), Lawerence Fishburne (Furious), Ice Cube (Dough Boy), Nia Long, Morris Chestnut (Ricky) deliver a very moving and powerful movie. John Singleton gets directing credit for this amazing movie. As some have already said this is not a gangster movie, this is a movie about growing up poor in South Central LA, and the survival needed to make it, its also about the relation between a father and his son (Trey & Furious), and about two of Trey's friends who have no father, brothers Ricky and Doughboy- one the rising football star, the other the local hood. To there mother, one can do no wrong, and the other is always in the wrong. Movie has some really positive moments, one of my favourites is when Trey and his pops are riding in the car, and listening to Five Stairsteps "Ooh Child" a classic soul song. Another thing that makes characters stand out is watching them develop from boys to men. Tragedy strikes in the movie, and Trey goes to look for revenge, then stops himself coming to realization that thats not the choice he wants to make in life. "Boyz 'N the Hood" is a good movie, that will keep you captivated from start to finish.
