Movie Reviews of Box of MoonlightMovie Review: Criminally underrated Summary: 5 Stars
Take two of America's best acting talents, add an unexpected stop and a sprinkle of whimsy, and you get one of the most underrated indie flicks of the 90s. John Turturro (Barton Fink, The Big Lebowski) plays a character who is the epitome of convention, until he finds himself stuck in the boonies where he meets a wild woodsman played by Sam Rockwell (Moon, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind). Rockwell's character is an impish and care-free fellow, who opens Turturro's eyes to the meaning of happiness. It's a simple tale, but the performances create an absolutely engaging and magical exploration of life. Wonderful sets from production designer extraordinaire Therese Deprez, the talent behind the shadowy aesthetic of 2010's Black Swan. There are no high contrast blacks and whites here though; Box of Moonlight is a world of color and vitality. Also of note is director Tom Decillo (Delirious, Living in Oblivion), who paints a tone of imperfect realism with a veneer of the unexpected. Box of Moonlight is a well-crafted and satisfying watch, sure to make viewers smile.
Summary of Box of MoonlightBOX OF MOONLIGHT - DVD Movie John Turturro plays a humorless engineer who uncharacteristically takes a brief break from his life to find the source of his only happy childhood memory. When that fails to materialize, he offers a ride to a benign, buckskin-attired kook (Sam Rockwell) and soon gets much deeper into the young fellow's unhinged life than he ever intended. Director Tom DiCillo (Living in Oblivion) makes a good case that Turturro's character is getting what he needs (a lot of loosening up) versus what he wants (everything on his terms). Ironically, the film can't make the same claim, tightly bound as it is to conventional and rather bland storytelling form. One keeps wanting something cinematically thrilling to happen, but the project is too rigid for that. Having said that, however, even if this isn't a great film, it is an awfully pleasant one. With Catherine Keener, Lisa Blount, and a cameo by Dermot Mulroney. --Tom Keogh
