Movie Reviews of BonhoefferMovie Review: Sensitive, Informative, Authoritative Summary: 5 Stars
This is an excellent film about Dietrich Bonhoeffer, incorporating not only the photographs and quotations that occur in most documentaries on him, but also outstanding original interviews with family members, former students of his and other colleagues.
The film footage from the 1930s and 40s is technically of high quality, and has been selected to show key parts of speeches by Hitler, where he spoke about God. It also shows clearly the close relationship between Nazism and the Lutheran Church in Germany, and between Nazism and the Roman Catholic Church at the highest level.
The "Extras" included on the DVD include a short but very interesting interview with the film maker and selected Bonhoeffer texts. At the time of writing this review, more information on the film is available at [...]
If you only see one film on Bonhoeffer, this is the one to see. Unreservedly recommended.
Movie Review: Inspiring biography that requires attention and reflection Summary: 5 Stars
I have been familiar with Dietrich Bonhoeffer for years, reading his COST OF DISCIPLESHIP and LETTERS FROM PRISON. Mr. Metaxas's biography revealed my previous glances could not even begin to understand and appreciate this great Christian leader and the world in which he lived.
I took this book with me on vacation, meaning to read a bit at the end of the day. I found myself carving out time alone to read, reflect and reread certain passages. Mr. Metaxas pays serious attention to detail, which seems to also reflect Bonhoeffer's thoughtful approach in many ways. Consequently, I found the book demanded more than a McReader mindset but it was well worth the effort.
Many books are enjoyable and fun but few make you want to be a better person. This book carries with it a weight, a burden, a calling. But it is a calling mixed with joy that can only come from "saying Yes to God's Yes."
Movie Review: A Man Who Walked His Talk Summary: 5 Stars
Superb documentary about a German minister who stood up publically against Hitler. Bonhoeffer taught that following Christ's call was not cheap or easy but ultimately rewarding. The film shows the real power and charisma of Hitler to great effect. Bonhoeffer recognized Hitler for the evil he was and didn't hesitate to speak openly against him when it was dangerous to do so.
What was most interesting to me is how Bonhoeffer went from a committed non-violent teacher of the Gospel to joining the conspirators who tried to assasinate Hitler in order to spare Germany and her people.
A fascinating slice of history and spirituality. If more demoninations had preachers and teachers like Bonhoeffer, Christianity wouldn't have the sorry reputation it has today.
Movie Review: Compelling and distressing Summary: 5 Stars
The producers have done an exceptional job making a compelling biopic on someone on whom there is almost no video footage. (We see Bonhoeffer in a moving image only once, at a family outdoor event, as I recall).
At the same time, they've made a movie about Germany, and in particular about how the Protestant and Catholic churches in Germany coped -- in some cases, welcomed -- the rise of the Nazi party, and about how Hitler himself used religious speech to his own ends. Almost all the footage of Hitler in this film is stuff I've never seen before; some of it startled me.
I learned a great deal, and was glad I did. The movie will probably appeal most to people interested in Bonhoeffer as a theologian and writer, but History Channel fans may get gripped too.
Movie Review: In the Face of Evil Summary: 5 Stars
This DVD is spectacular! Director Martin Doblmeier has created a great movie that focuses on Dietrich Bonhoeffer's extraordinary life. He juxaposes Bonhoeffer with many of the other German religious leaders who sacraficed Christian ideals for secular prestige. He traces the influence in Bonhoeffer's most notable Karl Barth, Jean Lasser and the Harlem church expierence.
The rare photos and background musical score, with interviews from previous students and Bonhoeffer's most noted biographer, Bethge and Bonhoeffer's nice (Bethge's wife)with voice over narrations is wonderful and compelling.
If you are interested in either Christian heros or WWII history, this DVD is a must.
