Movie Review: Heart and Bones
Summary: 5 Stars
This, in my opinion, is the best season of Bones. I've been a fan of the show for awhile now but it wasn't until the introduction of Sweets (John Francis Daley) that I really began to fall in love with this show. There has always been undeniable romantic tension between Booth and Bones but Sweets brings it to light in so many different ways. It's fun, moving and it's what makes this show tick. It prides itself on showing graphic close ups of decaying bodies and the characters being more than knowledgable in their area of expertise, but it's the emotion and heart of the show that drives every episode.
The season starts out in London, with a two part episode and the season ends with a bit of cliffhanger. You'll get some closure to the Gravedigger case (although I felt a little cheated with that one) and you'll get to experience several hallucintations with Booth which leads to the season ending cliffhanger. I know some people really didn't like the season finale, and I was one of those people upon first viewing, but getting a second and third chance to watch it, I now love it. It helped to keep reminding myself who the narrative voice is in that episode, which is revealed at the end of the episode.
You will also get a visit from Zach and from former shrink Wyatt who is becoming a chef now. In fact, the episode with Wyatt is my personal favorite in this season.
In the episode "Mayem On a Cross" Wyatt and Sweets share their thoughts on the Booth and Bones relationship which leads Wyatt to reveal that one of the two are actuely aware of their attraction to the other and struggles with it daily. It's the ending to this episode that shows just how much more talented these writers are than just about any other writers today. There is a scene with a very subtle hint that reveals to Sweets what Wyatt already knew. It's done without flare and without bringing attention to what he saw and it's brillantly done.
Oh, and there's a cameo by Stewie Griffin...what more do you want?
Ultimately this show is, has always been and will always be an examination of the human condition through the eyes of death.
