Movie Reviews of Bobby Darin - Mack Is Back

Movie Review: The best performance video I've seen so far
Summary: 5 Stars

I love Bobby Darin but I was previously disappointed in some of the other DVD performances I've seen of him. Most are grainy and features other guest artists, something I could car less about since I bought it to see Bobby.

However, this video is great. It's the entire taping of one of his last TV specials (he would die a few months later). The picture is crisp and the sound is excellent (although in 1970s mono). For a solid hour and fifteen minutes it's Bobby doing what he does best.

Portions of the taping were edited for TV broadcast, while other sections were not. When I say edited, they bleep out him saying "ass" a few times. That means we're seeing portions of his performance that were cut before the original broadcast.

The extras feature some nice home videos from the Darin estate with Dodd and Sandra Dee. There's a filmography with a few trailers and a complete discography.

If you're a Darin fan, you need this video. If not for the quality of the performance, then for the mere fact that is was one of his last.

Movie Review: THE ULTIMATE ENTERTAINER
Summary: 5 Stars

Having had the absolute pleasure of attending many of Bobby Darin's performances in person, as well as, being in posession of MANY of his LP's/CD's, he has proven over, and over again, to be the consummate all-around entertainer/actor/singer/musician. Although I have been a fan of Sinatra and Sammy Davis,Jr. for many years..NONE could surpass his magnifcent artistry. He just absolutely ran "circles" around EVERY great performer who has ever lived. His untimely death on Decemmber 20, 1973 was an absolute loss to the entertainment industry...."bar none." That date will be forever etched in my heart and soul, as well as, in my mind. Personally...that was the day "the music died." Never, in the future, will there ever be an all-around performer that could EVER come close to this phenomenal TALENT!!!!!!! May GOD BLESS YOU, Bobby.

Movie Review: BLOW YOUR MIND***** CONCERT!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

"MACK IS BACK" I simply adore this DVD !!! Bobby Darin--in my opinion--was the GREATEST PERFORMER/ENTERTAINER of his generation!!!!!! He had such a passion to perform to the world and did it soooo well!!! MACK had the nack, for making you FEEEEL what each song was saying >>>> with facial expressions and dance moves****YOU WON`T BE DISAPOINTED*****He starts with such stantards: "Can`t Take My Eyes OFF Of You,"Once in a lifetime", "Help Me Make It Through The Night", "Beyond The Sea", and then leads into the great "If I Were A Carpender", the intence "Midnight Special" and then ending with the awesome bluesy "BoDidly" & SPLISH SPLASH!!!!!!!! To think he did all this with being so ill & shortness of breath.*****Thank you Bobby***** for your passion + soul in a song****we miss you

Movie Review: Best Darin DVD
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the best Darin DVD available - Bobby died several months after this performance. This incredible DVD showcases better than any - and better than many of his CDs- the range of talent this man embodied. From "Beyond the Sea" to "Midnight Special," you get 200 percent of everything Bobby had to give. His energy in this performance is incredible, almost as if he knew it was his final. What's more, this performance had not been thoroughly rehearsed, Bobby had his oxygen sitting backstage to take hits from between songs, and if you watch closely, you'll see him working to get blood circulating through his hands. This is Bobby Darin at his cumulative best and shows what he could do with a song that no other vocalist can do.

Movie Review: A Great Legacy
Summary: 5 Stars

If you want to see what a true performer is, get this DVD. This concert performance was taped 8 months before Bobby's untimely death. He was extremely ill while taping this, but you would NEVER know it from his performance. He gave 150% to his audience, and refused to stop performing. He dances, sings and does impressions, tells stories, giggles with the audience and takes your breath away, especially considering the outcome. The DVD also has an unfinished documentary on his triumphant return in 1966 to the Cocoanut Grove, a discography, television clips from the Andy Williams and Flip Wilson shows, and film trailers from two of his movies. All in all, a consumate compilation, and a must own.
