Movie Reviews of Bob RobertsMovie Review: biting, clever & unconventional Summary: 4 StarsThe first writing/directing feature for Tim Robbins (The Player, Shawshank Redemption) is a biting 'mocumentary' on the functioning of American politics. Robbins plays Bob Roberts, a would-be senator, followed across the US by a British documentary crew during his campaign to be elected to Congress where he will ratify the use of US military forces in The Gulf. The problem is, Bob Roberts is a fanatic right-wing racist already renowned for his racially discriminatory folk music. While many will be put off by the unconventional nature of the film, and American pride is sure to be wrangled by a lot of what this film says, 'Bob Roberts' is nevertheless a fantastic watch and a great predecessor to more successful films such as 'Primary Colors.' If you have any interest in the machinations of American domestic politics or racial discrimination then this is a film worth owning for repeat viewings.
Movie Review: A Staggeringly Biased and Unrealistic Movie Summary: 1 StarsThe basic idea behind this movie is that anyone who is to the right of Tim Robbins politically is a hypocritical fraud. He creates a group of characters who embody the left's worst stereotypes of Conservatives and then proceeds to let us know what awful people they are . It's the kind of thoughtless agitprop that can only come from someone who's never actually met a Republican. If you've ever had a political discussion that was more nuanced than a lite beer commercial, this movie will leave you cold.
Movie Review: 1-2-3-4! What the hell are we voting for! Summary: 5 StarsA funny mockumentary that pokes holes in our "democratic" process, the media, corporate politics and the lack of insightful initiative in mainstream U.S. journalism and documentary making (leave it to the british to criticize the U.S. campaign process!). Even a nod to Mumia Abu-Jamal. Who knows what Bob Roberts stands for? Who cares? All anyone need know is that he is the "conservative rebel" ("passionate conservative"?/"reformer w/results"?) who strums on the guitar to political "folk" songs with great aplomb and mass commercial appeal. A good reminder of how shallow our democracy has become, and the handholding that is evident amongst big business, media, and government. Yea for tim robbins!
Movie Review: Bad Summary: 1 StarsThis is the second worst movie i have ever seen, only barely edging out a horrible movie entitled "Shakes the Clown" for the Absolute Worst Honors. If you like to think for yourself and have half the brain then this movie is probably not for you.
Movie Review: All too true...if a little over the top Summary: 5 StarsI am amazed that so few people appreciate or notice that Robbins skewers more than Republicans in this one! Has no one still alive seen "Dont Look Back", the documentary of Bob Dylan's 1965 English tour? "Bob Roberts" is a deft satire of "Dont Look Back" and the phenomenon of knee-jerk hero worship, whatever it's political pretensions. Rent "Dont Look Back" and this film at the same time, and watch this one second...I think you'll agree that this film has more complexity than most of it's reviewers have managed to notice.
