Movie Reviews of Bob Dylan - Don't Look Back (1965 Tour Deluxe Edition)Movie Review: Region code?! Summary: 5 StarsFunny thing to mention here is that the stated region block (region 1) isn't really present. I took the shot to order this and unlock my DVD player if I had to (I live in Amsterdam, region 2) but I didn't have to!! This DVD is region free! Thanks Amazon, but in future it would be nice to provide correct region-information. I bet that a lot European (and perhaps Australian, Russian and so on) customers cancel their order because of the region code not corresponding with their country region.
Regards
Movie Review: EXCELENTE REEDICION , DIGNA DE DYLAN Summary: 5 StarsPODES ESTAR DE ACUERDO O NO CON EL VALOR HISTORICO DE ESTA PELICULA...CRUDA, AUSTERA, MARAVILLOSA, SENCILLA, MONOTONA A VECES, INQUIETANTE, MORDAZ, PERO EL CUIDADO EXPUESTO EN ESTA NUEVA EDICION ES SOBRESALIENTE....QUIZAS COMO DICEN ALGUNOS, NO ES MAS QUE EL RETRATO DE UN ARTISTA EN GIRA, CON TODAS SUS GRANDEZAS Y SU BASURA..QUIZAS TENGAN RAZON ,LA DIFERENCIA ES QUE ESE ARTISTA ES BOB DYLAN!! EL DVD NUEVO AGREGA MAS MOMENTOS..TAL VEZ DE MENOR IMPORTANCIA (POR ALGO FUERON DEJADOS DE LADO EN SU MOMENTO) PERO COMPLETAN EN DEFINITIVA LA IDEA ORIGINAL..MUY SIMPATICO EL DETALLE DEL LIBRITO CON LAS IMAGENES DE LA APERTURA (MITICA!)EN RESUMEN, UNA NUEVA PRESENTACION ESMERADA, BELLA QUE ENCIERRA EL TESTIMONIO FIEL DE UNA EPOCA (QUE DICHO SEA DE PASO, NO CONDUJO A NINGUN LADO!!!)
Movie Review: Don't Look Back, Fast Forward-- Summary: 5 StarsThe first edition of Don't Look Back was the first DVD I ever bought and I bought a DVD player the same day.
It is an execellent example of the power and pitfalls of "cinema verite/direct cinema", a style emerging in the 1960s made possible by lightweight sound sync cameras and recorders, zoom lenses, and fast film stock. The "who threw the f-- glass" altercation followed by the cruel juxtoposition of Donovon offering "Song for You" to which Dylan responds with a smirk and "It's All Over Now Baby Blue" is one of the great passages in documentary film.
You may love or hate Dylan's music and after watching the film, you aren't left with any illusions about him being a nice person. But he is a force of nature. Lyrics poured through him, some timely, some timeless, raw ones and delicate ones. For me he was always better on recordings than in person, and the film reminds me why. But I'm glad to have this glimpse of the artist.
I don't know about the "deluxe edition". It may be worth it for the higher quality telecine transfer. The original film does not need amplification. It reveals more about Dylan than the bloated "No Direction Home" that used so much of the same footage.
Movie Review: Religion of Dylan Summary: 3 StarsIf you belong to the Religion of Dylan, this is a five-star item. For the rest of us, this is a pretty good concert movie spliced with long episodes of hippie profound talk. The music makes it worth it.
Movie Review: Bob Dylan vs. Donovan Summary: 5 StarsThis DVD was a fascinating view into the life of the greatest song and dance man of all time. The music video of Subterranean Homesick Blues is humorously primitive, but none the less, captivating and enthralling. After watching this movie I will never throw glass out of a window or wear a Dylan shirt to a Donovan concert again. If you like Bob you will love this DVD. It is a true necessity to any self-proclaimed Dylan fan. It's worth the money to see Bob and his manager make fun of Donovan. The tension is hysterical. I also recommend to any Dylan followers to buy his book "chronicles pt1". It's so well written I began to wonder if Bob missed his calling with that one. But then I remembered he released at least 10 albums worth seriously leaving your seat right now and buying, but none the less he is also an excellent writer. As for any Folk fans out there I also recommend buying The Newport Folk Festival DVD. Artists including but not limited to Bob Dylan, Donovan, Joan Baez, Odetta, Buffy Sainte Marie, Johnny Cash, Peter Paul and Mary and many more are shown performing at this infamous gathering. This, including comments and footage of the crowds, builds a feeling of unity that has quickly diminished in this overly unappreciative world. Buy it and you'll long to be there, I guarantee it.
