Movie Review: A Strange And Peculiar Sort Of Film

I have never been a big anime fan. It's not that I don't like them, it's just that I prefer realism to fantasy. Moreover, as a novice to anime I ALWAYS found it difficult to find a really good anime. Especially ones that my daughters could enjoy. And part of this was because since I did not know anime very well, I relied on amazon reviewers which gave out so many 5 star reviews of so many anime films, which were not that good, that I actually gave up on them. The reason was that so many of them I rented were very bad. Once again, I am not an expert when it comes to anime, and with my limited knowledge, and the many bad ones I have seen, I have become skeptical when it comes to reviews of these films. Too many bad ones have 5 star reviews.
However, there are the exceptions to the rule. I have enjoyed some immensely. There have been some great anime films such as "SPIRITED AWAY," and "VAMPIRE HUNTER D" that I thought were great. And at the pinnacle of ALL the anime films I have ever watched, the greatest one has been "GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES." Which is not only my favorite anime, but in my opinion--the greatest anime ever. Which brings me to this particular anime. I happened to buy it on a lark. A few years ago, one of the video stores I frequent had this one in there 'On Sale' bin for $1.99, and I figured that I couldn't go wrong on this one for the price. Is it a great anime? No. Is it a bad anime? Well, coming from this novice, I would say no.
The film itself centers on a character named Amamiku who is the daughter of environmental scientists. The Earth has been ravaged by a nuclear war, therefore, it is their job to help restore the Earth. However, when they arrive on Earth, a new conflict has arisen. And it is this conflict which leads the young Amamiku to become contaminated. As a result she must be confined in suspended animation under the sea. Years will pass before her computer awakens her. When she is discovered, she begins the task of helping to restore Earth to its original order. You can sense a lot of environmentalism depicted in the film. Helped by survivors of the Earth, she discovers that there is an evil mutant who wants to destroy all humans from the Earth. This is not the greatest anime I have seen, but it is a lot better than many of the ones with 5 stars listed here on amazon that I have viewed. Once again, I am not an expert on anime, but the film was not that bad. Recommend with caution. Rent it first.

In a world laid waste by nuclear war, Amamiku guards the seeds that hold the genetic code of the planet and can be used for its rebirth. Living underwater and protected from the radioactive atmosphere above, she impatiently waits for the earth to be ready for the seeds to germinate.But when her existence is discovered, it sparks a frantic race between the remains of humanity struggling for survival, and the disembodied brain, Glyptofane.
