Movie Review: Greatest Elvis movie...."Aloha Bra" Summary: 5 StarsElvis and cast are at their top in this fun loving Hawaiian location film. Storyline is healthy and wholesome, music is upbeat as always and great! Sometimes I just pop this movie in for background. I lived in Hawaii for years and makes for a good fix!
Elvis, take me away...
Movie Review: Light, Innocuous, Corny yet enjoyable Summary: 3 StarsI just watched the 2nd Elvis movie that I've ever saw in it's entirety - Blue Hawaii.
The acting is fine but the script is on the corny side - and there is only so much the actors can do with that. In a nutshell, I found the film to be light, innocuous, a little corny - but in this day and age, I found all of that to be refreshingly enjoyable!
The Story:
The storyline is that Chad (Elvis) returns from the army to his home in Hawaii. His parents are there and want him to join the family pineapple business. Chad, on the other hand, wants to hang out with his beach buddies, his girlfriend (who his mother doesn't like), and get his own job. In the end, Chad is able to please his parents, himself, and get married.
Along the way, the various characters just seem to break into song and dance at the slightest of provocations. Every one has a snappy one-liner and can pull a guitar or bongo drum out of thin air! It doesn't matter if they are fighting at a luau or being held behind bars or being fired from their job - everyone sings and dances and is happy!
Surprises in the film:
Angela Lansbury - as Chad's mother. Ms. Lansbury is a fine actress and that comes through even though the material is on the broad side. Funny thing here - Angela Lansbury was something like 36 years old when this movie was made - and she is playing the mother of Elvis (who was something like 25 or 26 when the movie was made).
Howard McNair - this is the guy that played Floyd the Barber on the Andy Griffith Show. The character he plays here is cut from the same cloth as Floyd. McNair might be lovable actor but he plays all of his roles the same way - he always seems to end his lines with a drawn out (and slightly creepy) "yes": "I'll be going to the show tonight with my wife. Yes, yes" or "That Chad is a fine boy. Yes, Yes".
Songs:
Most of the songs are disposable. This, of course, is not Elvis's fault. His vocals always outdid the quality of the movie's songs. The standout tunes are: "Blue Hawaii" and "Can't Help Falling in Love" - with an honorable mention going to the "Hawaiian Wedding Song".
Movie Review: Classic Elvis Summary: 5 StarsThis movie is Hawaii at it's most beautiful and Elvis at his most entertaining. It's a fun romp in the sun and makes you wish you were along for the ride. Blue Hawaii ranks up there with Viva Las Vegas as Elvis at his best. Angela Lansbury is hysterical as his Mother. If you're looking for a movie to grab a box of popcorn and a soda for this is it.
