Movie Reviews of Blue Gender - The Complete CollectionMovie Review: Good but not the best Summary: 4 StarsI first viewed this show a year or so again on Adult Swim. Due to my unstable work schedule, I was unable to watch it regularly. I decided that I liked what I saw and would order it.
Each episode is part of a greater story. But they break down very nicely. I wont bother to explain what the story is like as others have done that very well. However I will say that this sets box is the best I have ever seen. It has no book or paperwork to loose. Instead it has many single sided DVDs each on a flip-book style box. The last Disk is a full length movie version of the series. It has no original footage and is a bit edited I think. As an extra I give it a zero. But with 4 shows each it is a good series for watching in the morning or at night when you might have to leave or worry about falling asleep.
Get this if you want something to watch with an actual plot. Don't get this unless you are willing to spend several hours watching to understand the plot. this is not light cartoon type anime.
Movie Review: One of the best anime series Summary: 4 StarsIt's not the best anime series but for me it's one of the best in my 10 favorites. Highly recommended and it has a very good price for 9 DVDs. Buy it if you like the science fiction series or anime in general.
Movie Review: Blue Gender Summary: 5 StarsThis is the complete series of Blue Gender if you enjoy large mech combat and a somewhat mature theme this may be an anime of interest to you. I personally love the series for the characters and plot, the quality of the art is a bit lacking at times but the characters themselves are usually drawn very well.
Movie Review: Deeply dark sci-fi anime with serious themes Summary: 4 StarsI greatly enjoyed most of this anime, and as one earlier reviewer posted, "I kept going for the characters." The characters were ultimately what kept me going in the anime series, not only Marlene and Yugi, but the minor characters as well. I should warn that this review may include some small later spoilers, but I will try to keep these to a minimum.
What I liked:
As I mentioned, I greatly enjoyed the characters, particularly early on in the storyline before Yugi and Marlene reach the Baikonur base. The 'awakening' scene of Yugi, where he suddenly is awakened to be thrown into a horrific battle between mecha and a giant 'blue' insect that has basically torn apart everyone in the storing area, is one of the most emotionally powerful sequences I have ever seen in both anime and film. Not only that, but Yugi, and Marlene, largely react as one would expect residents of their respective worlds to act.
What I disliked:
Although I greatly enjoyed this anime, there were certainly a number of things that I disliked. These are the main three.
1. The Lack of Realism. Although this is a bit of a personal preference, and anime generally isn't intended to be completely realistic, certain features of the technology and design used in Blue Gender came to eventually bother me.
First off, the Blue are a group of giant insects (some flying, some not), who are mostly covered with armor that can only be penetrated with difficulty. At the same time, they have a usually open weak point that can lead to them being killed by weapons as low-power as a pistol. Why, then, would the humans pick weapons and mecha that are actually weak to the Blue? The mecha design would lead to greater instability as opposed to a tank, which would be more sturdily based.
Add on to this the Second Earth space station. It is shown that Second Earth is a basically self-reliable space station that includes what appears to be a lunar colony. Why, then, don't they simply settle mostly on the Moon? Certainly it would be easier to simply build lunar structures, taking advantage of lunar resources then and there, rather than sending them up into space, then to a free-standing structure.
2. The Later Plot Development Post-Baikonur. Although I greatly enjoyed the first sequence leading to Baikonur, and the latter sequences had their moments, for the most part, following the arrival in Second Earth, the plot takes a strong downturn. It becomes a more cliched We Need to Utterly Annihilate The Blue, with undertones of People Need to Live in Harmony, Gaia, and The Quiet Guy on the Verge of Explosion and Treason. The ending, in particular, is atrociously predictable, ignoring the interesting story that develops after the first main arc in Second Earth.
3. The characters. Although it may be strange to mention the characters as both a strength and a weakness, Yugi's character became noticeably weaker after arriving in Second Earth. Essentially the first major arc, leading to Baikonur, is character development of Marlene from a nearly emotionless killing machine, to a more human, warm person. After this is over, the story writers then go on to set up YUGI as the emotionless killing machine, and lead him through a predictable return to a more human, warm person.
The criticism above might make it seem like I don't really like this anime, when nothing could be further from the truth. I greatly enjoyed watching this, although specific bits annoyed me.
Movie Review: It made me feel all warm inside! Summary: 5 StarsGreat characters, you actually care what happens to them! Great story, you kinda don't want it to go on for fear that it will end even though you need to know what happens next. You get closure, unlike some animes that leave off without telling you what really happens next.
If you likes watching giant bug things get killed by the people that made them, buy this.
Oh, the movie really sucks... Don't watch it, it kinda hurts...
