Movie Reviews of Blow Up

Movie Review: The Antonioni step
Summary: 5 Stars

A phothographer (David Heminngs) gets a slapshot and he believes there's a murder in that picture.
The reality is elusive , and watch about your senses seem to reveal you . Nothing is like it seems . The hidden message underneath the script .
Antonioni has been called quite often the master of the silence . And in this case , in his first american film he challenges our ancient beliefs , what we usually mean as common sense . What's the truth and where does it begin our disturbed or prejuiced perceptions about the real world ? .
Obviously there's a hidden message about the drug world in this statement.
The ending sequence in (what we see ?) a mude tennis game is not only a sincere tribute to the timeless genius of the mimo art - Marcel Marceau - , but a clear reference about we state as truth many times what other senses vaguely pretend establish .

Movie Review: The Sublime
Summary: 5 Stars

In the same way "Moby Dick" is about a whale, this film is about "swingin" 60's London. The words sublime, tedious, enigmatic, mysterious are used by others to describe both. In short, the film is a carefully crafted assemblage of symbols used to confront the viewer (and protagonist) into the unreality that lies (subtlely, quietly) within the surface of this world and the decidedly unknowable behind it. This "Reality and Illusion" theme is a well worn path. In fact, it has been with us since the Beginning. "Blow-Up" is a subtle, quiet and finely crafted film waiting to be discovered by those who "get" it. It is tedious for those who care not to. It truly does touch the sublime. Like the universe, it is a wonderful, horrible ritual, waiting. You need only try.

Movie Review: A wonderful snapshot of the 60's
Summary: 5 Stars

I first saw this film while in college, and was fascinated with its message, plot and cinematography. I still am. I love the illusion-versus-reality central theme, and its development through the twin vehicles of photography and the mime troupe. I was, and am, completely enthralled by the sound and cinematography of the park/murder scene with David Hemmings and Vanessa Redgrave. But, I'm a photographer, and Antonioni's development of the plot through the sequential enlargement of photos resonated with me more than it might with others. It's also fun to see the Yardbirds in a cameo role, when they had both Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page playing guitars. One of my favorites, and, hopefully, the long-overdue DVD will feature the great sound and video that the film deserves.

Movie Review: Peter Brunette's excellent commentary
Summary: 5 Stars

Blowup, made in 1966, was a wonderful movie experience when I saw it then. And now seeing it in a wonderfully restored verison on DVD made me understand why I enjoyed it so much. This is due mainly to the very insightful commentary by Peter Brunette. Peter, I believe, as set a new standard for very prepared and thoughtful commentaries for DVDs. He describes each scene, explains the importance of it, and gives how other critics have looked at it.

Most importantly, Prof. Brunette has a keen understanding of the political atmosphere of the period. He allows the viewer to gain a valuable sense of what Antonioni was trying to accomplish with this film and gives us an understanding of the late 1960's.

Movie Review: Relax & Enjoy It!
Summary: 5 Stars

The successful fashion photographer (Hemmings / Antonioni?) is trapped in a world of mirrors. He's expert in making things seem sexy & glamorous. But he feels less and less satisfied with appearances. The girls don't do it; his pictures are formulaic. He thinks he's found something special in a mysterious woman -- but then finds (or does he?) that she isn't what she seems either. What did happen in the park? A few grains of image (a few pixels) really are not reality, just a suggestion. OK, the ending is just plain stupid -- driving home the needle point with a sledgehammer.
But the movie is beautiful, sexy, mysterious and interesting. What more do you want?
