Movie Reviews of Blow Dry

Movie Review: Look behind the hairspray and see the real beauty.
Summary: 4 Stars

A wife (Natasha Richardson) suddenly leaves her husband (Alan Rickman) and young son (Josh Hartnett) for another woman (Rachel Griffiths). Ten years later, she has cancer and is dying.

In an attempt to try up loose ends in her life, Shelley Allen wants to enter a team (herself, her ex, their son, and her lover) in the British National Hairdressing Championships for old time's sake.

Winning is optional.

Alan Rickman works his magic has the husband who never stopped loving his wife; he's no longer "in love" but she is still importent to him.

Natasha Richardson radiates fear as a woman who knows her days are numbered but doesn't know how many she has left. She wants to live her last days in happiness with her family and reuniting this winning styling team may be her only hope to make that happen.

The weak link in a chain of strong actors are the Americans, Josh Hartnett and Rachael Leigh Cook. Hartnett's accent leaves something to be desired and he comes off very stiff. Cook's part serves little use--she is a pretty face and the insurance that Rickman and Richardson's styling team capture the win.

However, under all the fun, glamor, and heated competition that is the odd business of professional hair-styling, the message is very simple: The importent stuff in life never really goes away, it just changes a little.

Movie Review: CHARMING COMEDY-MELODRAMA
Summary: 4 Stars

I was pleasantly surprised by this movie and it is witty, insightful, and touching. The cover art for the DVD shows Josh Hartnett but the REAL stars are Alan Rickman, Rachel Griffiths, Bill Nighy, and Natasha Richardson.

When Griffiths appears at the end completely in the nude with fantastic tattooing and hairstyle it is enough to turn a gay man straight - what a body. She continues the very good work she did in "Muriel's Wedding."

Another under-rated actor in the movie is Warren Clarke who demonstrated his superb acting abilities in the Dalziel and Pascoe series on British television. He is touching and very funny as the mayor of the small town and the emcee for the "pageant".

Rickman as usual does extraordinary things with a smallish part and Bill Nighy, another under-rated actor, is great as his rival. The insights into high-fashion and competitive hairdressing is intriguing and some of the hairdoes are worthy of the court of Queen Marie Antoinette.

ALtogether a great movie and one that I will return to when I want to see accomplished British actors perform their art with aplomb.

Movie Review: Swept up with Blow Dry
Summary: 4 Stars

Blow Dry is a CANT MISS comedy with a bitter sweetness that you will enjoy.

With talented Actors like Alan Rickman, Natasha Richardson, Rachel Griffiths, Rachael Leigh Cook, and Josh Hartnett, this small British comedy about a hair styling contest with Romeo and Juliet overtones. Watch Hartnett and Cook shine in their roles. Rickman showcases he can do evil villians in Die Hard, then pull off this role as a stylist who is feeling lost in and from his craft

This interconnected stories of a family and friends of a hair cutting group. The small town gets the contest and starts the interpersonal relationships and rivaleries

If you looking for a special effect movie, pass this by. If you looking for a movie with a heart, similar to the small films like WEaking Ned Devine, Gregory's Girl or Fully Monty, this film is for you

Movie Review: No great message, Just Great Fun!!!
Summary: 4 Stars

I must say, from the opening sequence, this film had me giggling. This is one of those movies that are best watched when you want to sit back, relax, free your mind and just enjoy! Although, there is a serious understory (a woman with cancer) it is not the main focus of this tale. It is handled with discretion, much like the character with cancer wishes her illness to be handled. This film was a pure delight to watch. I was pleasantly surprised and completely entertained. To be honest, there really is a message in this film. One of forgiveness, acceptance, reconciliation, and love....but it doesn't hit you over the head with it, nor does it fall into the trap of trying to be overly funny with slapstick humor. It's humor is in the observation of people at their most outrageous...without realizing they are, in fact, outrageous. Pure entertainment and well worth the short 91 minutes. Enjoy!

Movie Review: Family
Summary: 4 Stars

This isn't normally my style of film at all. I don't like comedy. However, this is a drama-comedy and it actually works fairly well. Phil Allen is my favorite Alan Rickman part, thus far. He allows a bit more expression and emotional range here than found in other works. Phil is melancholy and wistful for what once was, which I found touching and believable. Losing the love of your life isn't easy no matter how it occurs.

I wasn't keen on the lesbian relationship element but at least it wasn't graphic. I noticed that Bill Nighy played Phil's nemesis, Ray, here and in the end enjoyed his char too. I certainly prefer the pair here as opposed to Love Actually. The main theme here is finding closure and reconciling your past.
