Movie Reviews of Blow DryMovie Review: Great sleeper of a movie Summary: 5 Stars
Wonderful movie, directed by the late (and great!) Sidney Pollack. It has a terrific cast and the characters are beautifully written and wonderfully directed. Each time I watch it, I notice additional nuances in the performances, which are great all around.
BTW, the story is much more sophisticated & complex than the cover art suggests: the young photogenic stars on the cover (Hartnett & Cook) are very good in their roles, but the real stars are Alan Rickman, Natasha Richardson, Bill Nighy, and Rachel Griffiths. Although the story centers around a national hair-styling competition and its impact on the inhabitants of the small British town chosen to host it, there are several subplots concerning the complex relationships between various characters - with some very moving scenes. The picture deals with terminal cancer, for example, but the ending is triumphant and the movie is very, VERY funny & uplifting. Watch it with friends who are not hardened and judgemental about same-sex relationships, or prudish, though -- it's campy at times.
Movie Review: Making the Cut Summary: 5 Stars
The plot is a predictable luckily the actors along with the make up and costume department make up for it. This movie shows various hair styles and costumes through it helping to keep the viewer's attention. The British Hairdressing Championship is set to take place in a town called, Keighley. Among its residence is Phil Allen (Alan Rickman) who competed for 10 years before losing it all. Now he is a barbar with his son Brian (Josh Hartnell) and his ex-wife Shelley, whom he hasn't spoke to in 10 years, and her lesbian lover Sandra (played by Natasha Richardson and Rachel Griffiths) work only a few buildings down. Allen refuses to enter the championship despite his ex-wife's request and his son's interest. Its only when Shelley reveals a secret to her ex-husband and son does Allen and the other characters start to understand a lesson in love, revenge, forgiveness, and family.
Movie Review: A Yorkshire Pudding treat! Summary: 5 Stars
I love this movie! It's got great actors - Alan Rickman, Natasha ichardson, Rachel Griffiths, Bill Nighy and Warren Clarke. They all use that lovely Yorkshire accent and lots of "summats", "nobbuts" and "nowts" - even Josh Hartnett's accent sounds authentic to this Anglophile. The movie has a naive sweetness to it that never gets old. There are a lot of descriptions of the plot here, so I won't go into it, but I laugh out loud everytime I watch it and finally bought, here on Amazon, because it's so hard to find. I've recommended to all my hairdresser friends
Movie Review: Blow Dry: It's Not Just About Hair Summary: 5 Stars
Alan Rickman is fantastic in any role he takes on. In his role as a divorced hair stylist, who is still in love with his ex-wife who is a lesbian, Alan continues to amaze the audience with his multi-faceted talent. He touches your heart with humor, love, angered emotion and a yearning for what he knows he can't have; his wife. In the midst of it all is a plot that is both comical and tragic. This film had me watching it again and again and again. If you love Alan Rickman, you will love this movie as well.
Movie Review: A Keeper Movie Summary: 5 Stars
This movie does what all movies should do. You are transported to another place by a sense of reality created by the believable characters, the sense of place, the intriguing situations and the drama. Now every so often I pop the DVD in and go back there. I think I like the transformation of the mayor best, from ordinary man to Elvis. It is little touches like this that make this movie one that merits rewatching. Other reviewers have touched on the salient points of the acting and said it better.
