Movie Reviews of Blood for DraculaMovie Review: Dracula Sucks Indeed,...But The Movie Is Fabulous!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Among the whole collective historical annals of vampire cinema, THIS is one of the few truely unique, original, clever, and entertaining films of the genre, and is genuinely deserving of real bonafide classic status! It has a clever concept and plot, is occasionally funny yet also rather tragic, a bit gross at times, and features very good performances by a very good cast.
Firstly let me state that THIS is NOT a vampire film for ohhh Blade, Lost Boys or Dusk Till Dawn fans ( I even suspect that some of the low reviews here are from idiots who'd expected THAT type of movie ) and, though a Dracula movie, it isn't even a conventional "horror" film as such. This is actually more like a funny avante-gard type film with a vampire as it's subject. It's a CULT film in a very true sense of the term,.. and is probably more for the John Waters or David Lynch set than than your typical ordinary horror fan. For one thing, this Dracula is not very fearsome and menacing like, say for example, the demonic and ferocious Christopher Lee,.. and he's certainly as hell not like those super-jock vampires in those Blade and Twilight masterpieces ( doing flips and cartwheels through the air, karate fighting, and the sort )! In fact, ole Drac is rather infirm throughout most of this film, which is relevant to the plot as he's deprived of the virgins blood which would invigorate him,.. so you'll have to make allowance for that here.
And, though this film does have it's definate humorous side, it isn't exactly a "comedy" in any straight conventional sense either. Pute another way, this movie is not like ohhhh,.. Vampire In Brooklyn or Love At First Bite. The humor in this flick is actually rather subtle and more in the nature of ironic satire rather than "comedy" or even "camp".
To give an example of this movies humor, theres this one scene in wich ole Drac is looking into a mirror while primping narcisisticaly ( applying rouge to his cheeks, red tint to his lips and black dye to his eyebrows and blond swept-back hair ), and then the viewer pans over, from his face, to the mirror,.. to reveal that he does'nt even have a damn reflection!!...HA!! HA!! Just clever little bits of subtle irony like that. It's also in some of the dialogue,like........
"My bed ( coffin ) wont fit in the car!"
"Then it will ride on top. We'll say that it's a dead relative whom we're returning to his ancesteral home."
..Or when Drac complains about his lodgings.........
"This room is terrible!!! It's filled with light!!! And the kitchen here is filld with unpure( non-virgin )meat!!!"
..Or when Drac urgently pumps a female victim about her sexual history.........
"So, you are a virgin?!!
"Yes."
"Realy?!! You're telling me the truth?!!!
"Yes, of course!!
"GOOD!!! I beleive you!!!
...and then bites her neck and comences slurping.
This film also has it's share of pretty gross scenes ( wich are relevant to the story and are also very cleverly concieved ) such as when Drac devours a loaf of blood-soaked bread furnished by his creepy servant ( who'd gleand the blood from a young girls gruesome death scene )......
Servant; "So how was it? Was she good?
Dracula; "Yes!! It worked!! It WORKED!!! She was pure!!!
The scenes of Drac retching, after drinking tainted blood, are also quite gross and disturbing,.. yet are also very dramatic and even rather poignant. Then theres also the very elaborate and splashy finale, wich I shall refrain from relating here. I'le leave that for you to see for yourself.
The cast and performances are very good for the most part. Udo Kier, inparticular, is excelent as ole Drac, and his portrayal was quite a groundbreaking departure from all previous screen portrayals of the count. His sense of desperation and missery is excelently conveyd. It's also worth noting that Kiers Dracula also has a kind of sexualy androgynous quality and thats something els wich was still quite novel and inovative at the time of this film ( of course this is Warhole and THAT particular element was nothing new in HIS particular realm, but it was pretty weird and unconventional in a vampire movie ).
Other memorable and noteworthy performances are Joe Dallesandro as the
"YOU'R the one he wants now!! You aught'a ahhhhh,...lose that virginity of you'rs,...ya know? Then he cant get to ya.
Victorio DeSica as an eccentric, indeed somewhat insane, old pretentious
"Dracula!....Dra----cula!.....Dracu------lA------!!...dracula!
...and Arno Jugering ( wonder what manor of name that is? ) as Dracs creepy sidekick Anton. You'll GRINGE and SHUDDER when he
"How OLD are you,.. little girl?!
