Movie Reviews of Blood - The Last VampireMovie Review: blood Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great anime, short but great, and details a lot of plot gaps in the series, however, it takes place after the series, like a side topic of sorts, and so many people who do not knwo the series will be lost.
Great animation, voice acting in english is decent and same goes for the japanese, decent. The real treat is the mix of Computer Graphics (CG) with computer enhanced cell animation, which started witht he movie Akira in the mid 80's and revolutionized animation forever. This, along with nearly all other animes, uses such animation, but the mix of CG with it makes it look far better. The movie is only about 44 minutes long, sadly, so if you are looking for a real "movie" with deep plot and typical anime twists and villains and heroes you will be disappointed.
This is for the fans of the show and manga, which are both excellent also, I might add. I prefer this movie to the actual show, much nicer and more effort was put into the rendering of the overall movie. Like all t.v. shows, deadlines and other issues prevent much of all animated movies and shows from looking like this or better even. When you realize that a single spongebob episode of 22-24 minutes takes 9 months to make, you might not be as surpirsed to see this movie only be 44 minutes long!
Movie Review: An Excellent Short Film Summary: 5 Stars
"Blood" is a moody, atmospheric vignette that leaves you eager for more. We're introduced to the characters with very little background. Context is easily inferred, since the filmakers worked so hard on making all the characters unique and expressive (the axiom "show, don't tell" works quite well here). The artwork is wonderful, with several eye-catching, memorable scenes: vampire/demon thing on the roof of the carpool building; lead character attacking the demon in the nurse's office; etcetera. The pacing of the plot is much like a very good, intense short story. Almost all the unecessary bits have been stripped away, leaving pure, concentrated action.Although I think the filmakers were wise in limiting the length of the story for "Blood", I would certainly love to see a longer treatment of the characters and history in another film (or at least in a manga). The "making of" documentary that comes with the DVD gives a sorta choppy view of what it takes to make a modern anime movie. It left me appreciating the filmakers all the more, since the amount of work put into just a short film seems monumental. I would definitely list "Blood" in the anime lexicon, alongside "Akira", "Ghost in the Shell", and "Princess Mononoke" as examples of the art. Check it out.
Movie Review: An amazing accomplishment Summary: 5 Stars
Yes, people will tell you the film is far too short and perhaps Saya's character is underdeveloped. However, don't let them fool you. This is a stunning accomplishment within the genre of anime. I have only seen a few anime films in my time and amongst my favorites are Princess Mononoke, Vampire Hunter D, and just recently Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. This film is definitely on par. The plot is terrific, compelling, fascinating. The animation is almost unparalleled as far as I am concerned. For those who have witnessed Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (another amazing film in my opinion) and perhaps others, you can truly appreciate digitally rendered animation. Not that Blood.. has an identical look or feel as the Final Fantasy film, but the potential of digital animation is truly astounding and is represented well in both films I think. Until I read the Amazon review of Blood..., I didn't realize that the film was a mixture of digital and traditional, hand-drawn anime. What an astounding combination. It is truly a beautifully rendered film on many levels. However, be warned, it is relatively short and will leave you frustratingly hanging in the worst way. But maybe there is hope for a sequel? At the very least...rent it!!!
Movie Review: Wow. Summary: 5 Stars
Simply, this manga is breathtaking. Admittedly I need a bit of plot and characterisation to get me interested in a film, but this is the one example where I'm glad it is non-existent. With just a short 45 minute running time, it hasn't got a lot of room to play around, and so it doesn't waste any time jumping straight into the nitty-gritty action. And it's here where I have to pause and reflect, and just take the time out to say...Wow. The animation in this movie was absolutely astounding. I have never seen anything as fluid, and atmospheric and violent for a very long time, possibly ever. It was stupendiously realised, and the characters, while we learn hardly anything about them., are well drawn and acted enough to make them interesting without having a basis to be interested (damn, how did they do that!). The hollywood music is also an excellent addition to this truly cinematic piece which makes it feel ever more the big-budget epic. True, it is short, but it's short because it decides to be. it doesn't want to bog itself down with complicated plots or long phases of build-up. It does exactly what it says on the tim. Blood. And lots of it. Lovely...
Movie Review: Short, sweet, fantastic Summary: 5 Stars
This is anime for those people who like to connect their own dots. There is a lot left unsaid, but, a lot of clues to fill in yourself. I personally enjoyed it greatly, but can see for those audience who like to be told everything - they would not enjoy this.
The anime is short in running time, about 45 minutes. The artwork is amazing. The pacing, and the cinematography create the mood and tension that surpass most filmmakers today. The animation is solid; timing of the action sequences perfect. Especially For those studying film, I would highly suggest this. This film is for those with a discerning palette for a piece that completely immerses you in mood/atmosphere with image, timing, and music.
It is no wonder that there is a quote by James Cameron (director of Titanic) "Digital imaging has entered a new era. The world will come to consider this work as the standard of top quality in digital animaiton."
I would not recommend this for those looking for a vampire slasher/action film. Those who do decide to purchase it, I hope you enjoy this masterpiece!
