Movie Reviews of Blood Simple

Movie Review: The electrifying first film from the Coen's
Summary: 4 Stars

Before No Country For Old Men, before The Big Lebowski, and before Fargo; Joel and Ethan Coen crafted this homage to the crime-noir. Blood Simple stars Dan Hedaya as a sleezy bar owner who plots to have his cheating wife (Frances McDormand in her screen debut) and his bartender (John Getz) with whom she is having an affair murdered. Things don't quite go as planned however when the hitman he hires (M. Emmet Walsh) turns the tables, and things begin to spiral out of control for everyone involved. Simply speaking, Blood Simple is a riveting ride with plenty of atmosphere and even some unnerving moments that seem straight out of a horror flick, and for it's entire running time will keep you glued to the screen. It isn't as sophisticated or well-crafted as their later works would be, but there isn't any denying that Blood Simple didn't set the stage for the greatness from the Coen brothers to come.

Movie Review: Blood Simple (1985) "The Director's Cut"
Summary: 4 Stars

Unusually for such an exercise it is some three minutes shorter than the original theatrical release. The Coens shortened the film by tightening the editing, shortening some shots and removing others altogether. In addition, they resolved longstanding rights issues with the music: the original theatrical version of the film made prominent use of The Four Tops' "_It's the Same Old Song_", but this had to be replaced with Neil Diamond's "I'm a Believer" (made famous by The Monkees' cover) for the US home video edition (though not for international video versions). The "directors' cut" reinstated the Four Tops track, as the Coens had always intended.

Movie Review: GREAT FILM, BUT WHERE IS THE THEATRICAL VERSION?
Summary: 4 Stars

I have never seen the theatrical cut of this film, but I have heard much about it. While I really enjoyed this version, I feel I'm missing something, by not seeing the theatrical version. The 4 star rating is for the DVD release not the film which is 5 stars!

The film regardless of which version you see is truly mesmerizing. Every time I figured out what was going to happen, they would throw in a surprise!.....something that rarely happens to me. I really don't know how to describe this film, so I'll tell you this,..... it's got infidelity,... murder,.... robbery,.... "blood" and it's not "simple" by a long shot!

Movie Review: Still great stuff, but the original edition is better
Summary: 4 Stars

There are definitely some things missing from this later edition, and some drastic re-editing of scenes. I much prefer the original version to this one. However, the story and characters are still riveting, the atmosphere of the Texas flatlands is still haunting, the music is minimal and carefully chosen, and what the heck....Even the Coens' weaker efforts are still superior to many films. This is worth looking at, but hold on to the first version.

Movie Review: One of the great film noirs.
Summary: 4 Stars

The original was, the Directors Cut is not. The jarring Neil Diamond music was removed and some good dialog was cut out. I'd love to own a DVD copy of the original. If producers/directors decide to cut up great movies like Blood Simple and Bladerunner, they should leave the originals available too. At least I have an original VHS and Laser Disc but still..."The world is full of complainers.....
