Movie Reviews of Blood Simple

Movie Review: Blood Simple is a Terrifying Film
Summary: 5 Stars

I first saw this movie working overnight in a group home. All alone with the lights off, I was terrified. Something about burying people alive terrifies me. The movie shows two very young and inexperienced directors making a horror movie with few special effects and instead paying some great actors. It is scary and wonderful. I saw it in the theaters once and that was great too. A terrific little scary movie with the right combination of suspense, blood and eeriness to make it a classic.

Movie Review: Memorable Modern Noir
Summary: 5 Stars

This was the Coen Brothers first movie and it'a a suspenseful neo-noir (modern-day film noir) filled with fun direction by the Coens: low camera angles, closeups, concentration of sounds such as the whirring of an overhead fan, some dramatic pauses, strange characters and even stranger events taking place. The only thing missing I'd like to have is 5.1 surround sound. Maybe a Blu-Ray release of this some day will bring all the elements together, because it's a very entertaining movie.

Warning: some bloody scenes in here are downright gross, but they sure produce some memorable scenes.

Character-wise, Dan Hedeya proves to be the toughest man to kill I've ever seen in a movie! Frances McDormand is young and looks pretty, the best I've ever seen her look. John Getz's character is strange and sometimes to frustrating to watch and Emmet Walsh is outstanding at playing the sleazy private detective. Those four, along with Samm-Art Williams, comprise almost all the speaking parts in this film.

This is an involving movie. Once started, you're hooked on this strange story. I had always wished the Coens would have made more movies like this. They finally did in 2008 with "No Country For Old Men," another strange Coen noirish tale.

Movie Review: GREAT FILM, BUT WHERE IS THE THEATRICAL VERSION?
Summary: 4 Stars

I have never seen the theatrical cut of this film, but I have heard much about it. While I really enjoyed this version, I feel I'm missing something, by not seeing the theatrical version. The 4 star rating is for the DVD release not the film which is 5 stars!

The film regardless of which version you see is truly mesmerizing. Every time I figured out what was going to happen, they would throw in a surprise!.....something that rarely happens to me. I really don't know how to describe this film, so I'll tell you this,..... it's got infidelity,... murder,.... robbery,.... "blood" and it's not "simple" by a long shot!

Movie Review: Coen Brothers first film fails to take off
Summary: 2 Stars

Abby Marty (Frances McDormand) is running away from husband Julian Marty (Dan Hedaya), known simply as "Marty". She's hitched a ride with Ray (John Getz), who works for Marty at his bar. When they stop at a hotel the affair starts. Little do they know that Marty has a private investigator on them, Loren Visser (M. Emmett Walsh), taking pictures of their more intimate moments. Ray and Abby return to town instead of running away, but Abby refuses to move back in with Marty.

Marty, in the meantime, has decided to pay the slippery Loren $10,000 to murder Ray and Abby; but Loren figures it's a better deal to steal Abby's gun, murder Marty with it, and take the money anyway. Ray finds the body and Abby's gun and believes that Abby murdered Marty, so he attempts to hide the crime, becoming involved with it also. But Abby is innocent, and doesn't know what to do when Ray vaguely tries to tell her he's helped her out.

I wasn't that impressed with this first Coen Brother's film. It was rather deadpan, and whether on purpose or by accident it was too hard to tell. There just wasn't enough 'Ummph" in the movie for my tastes. There is such a thing as drawing out a scene too long, and that's what happens several times during the film. It's slow, and lacking in drama or suspense. There's a great plot here, it's just poorly executed. After being told how great the movie was, and after seeing what the Coen Brothers and Frances McDormand did with 'Fargo', I found 'Blood Simple' to be a disappointing let-down. Rent, don't buy.

Movie Review: 2.5 stars out of 4
Summary: 3 Stars

The Bottom Line:

A cleverly-plotted neo-noir, Blood Simple is hampered by the fact that only Emmett Walsh shows any charisma--the lead couple is so wooden that the audience is hard-pressed to care a hoot about them; it's not a bad movie, but it's not very special either.
