Movie Reviews of Bleak HouseMovie Review: Enchanting Story Summary: 5 Stars
My wife and I first saw the series on PBS, but missed some of the programming because of telephone calls, etc. We opted to purchase the series so that we could see it at our leisure, but upon receipt, realized that we could easily become engrossed in the drama. It took us only two evenings to see the entire series, and we realized that it was one of the few things that we have that we can revisit with pleasure. The plot twists and eventual conclusion did not disappoint. The presentation, scenery, acting, all were exemplary. I had not realized that Gillian Anderson was a character from American television, but I thought that her performance was superb. My wife has subsequently invited our daughter and daughters-in-law to a "Bleak House" event, where they all binged on seeing the entire series. Men took care of the children, so both sides had an eventful weekend. I would highly recommend this series to anyone who wants a pleasurable viewing experience and an education in Dickensian England.
Movie Review: BBC has done it again Summary: 5 Stars
BBC has once again brought a great story to life in this excellent production of Charles Dickens "Bleak House," which is a story about complicated relationships, past and present, murder, ruthless lawyers and one young man's obsession for wealth and justice. This fast paced, twisting and turning story centers around a court case refered to as "Jarndyce & Jarndyce",a case that has been ongoing for a long time and if solved will make the two wards of the case wealthy. In the meantime there are some complicated relationships and situations that involve secrets, love, murder, death, obsession and even humor. Every actor and actress play there roll beautifully. The story includes some very odd characters as is always the fashion with Charles Dickens. His stories would not have the "flair" without these characters which is why Dickens is truly one of the greatest writers of all time. This movie is FREE of bad language, nudity, and sleaze. It is done with impeccable taste (Thank you BBC).
Movie Review: Immediately Hooked! Summary: 5 Stars
I lost a lot of sleep over this series, because I watched all 15 episodes within a few days' time. It's utterly enthralling.
The acting is superb and totally Dickensian. My favorite role was Burn Gorman as the awkward, ambitious but mostly good-hearted Mr. Guppy. Just brilliant. Charles Dance plays Tulkinghorn with precisely evil elegance. And even though she's not conventionally beautiful, you can't take your eyes off Anna Maxwell Martin as Esther Summerson. She's just stunning.
Only two quibbles - I didn't care for Gillian Anderson's one-speed, lip-curling portrayal of Lady Dedlock, but she's so elegant and haughty she manages to pull it off. Also, I found the slam-dunk camera work a bit intrusive, as well as a few initial scenes (where we meet Lady Dedlock; the scene with young Esther and her cruel aunt) which were shot like a bad 70s German art film.
But these are brief and forgiveable failings. This series is a winner!
Movie Review: An amazing adaptation! Summary: 5 Stars
Having read and thoroughly enjoyed the Dickens novel, I was very excited to see the newest adaptation. I was not at all disappointed. It must be very difficult to be able to convert such a massive novel into film without leaving anything vital out, but somehow Davies has done it again! As far as the acting goes, there wasn't a single weak link, even in the more secondary roles. Some of my favorite portrayals included Lady Deadlock (whose tragic story made me cry multiple times), Esther Summerson, Mr. George (one of my favorite characters in the book), Mr. Tulkinghorn, Harold Skimpole and Mr. Woodcourt, who I have now developed a bit of a fangirl-ish crush on. However, there were many others that I might mention. The only thing that I didn't entirely like was the abrupt transitions, but I eventually got used to them.
In sum, I would STRONGLY recommend this adaptation to all Dickens fans. It truly captures the spirit of the novel.
Movie Review: Utterly Captivating Summary: 5 Stars
I simply could not tear my eyes from the screen while viewing this wonderful masterpiece. I am an avid Dickens fan and it is rare for me to find a film which does his work justice. This miniseries is more than up for the challenge. Dark, gorgeous and often heart-wrenching, this one will stay with you for a while. The cast is pitch-perfect. Gillian Anderson especially captured her character in a heart-breaking way. Charles Dance too, makes a chilling villain and I absolutely fell in love with Anna Maxwell Martin and Richard Harrington as love interests. Their chemistry had a sweetness to it which is often hard to find in movies. The script translates Dicken's rambling language into a speakable version and the cinematography uses a few modern twists to give this old story a slightly updated feel. This is a great movie to curl up with on a rainy night and get sucked into the magic. I would recommend this to anyone.
