Movie Reviews of Blazing Saddles [Blu-ray]Movie Review: Blu Ray Review Summary: 5 Stars
This review is for the Blu Ray version of Blazing Saddles. I just got it yesterday and watched it already and I am VERY impressed by the picture and sound! I didn't see any scratchiness or white blips or anything on the picture and the sound was also very good. Obviously, it's a very old movie so there's only so much you can expect, but if you're a fan enough to buy this movie on Blu Ray, I don't think you'll be disappointed with the picture and sound. I have not seen the movie on DVD so I can't say if the blu ray is a lot better. But for the price Amazon sells the blu ray for, there's no excuse not to pick it up. I'm not going to talk about the movie very much because it's been out for 30 years and there's plenty of other reviews that give a synopsis. I had never seen it before and thought it was mildly funny. It does use the "N" word a lot so if this offends you don't bother watching. It has a few laugh out loud moments, and I recognized a lot of comedy routines and phrases in this one that I've also heard in newer movies, so I'm guessing this is where they got their material from. That being said, it wasn't nearly as funny as I thought it would be based on what my friends told me. I think they're remembering it being funnier than it really is :) Hope this helps, at least for those considering buying it on Blu Ray.
Movie Review: I'd /like/ to give BS only four stars... Summary: 5 Stars
...simply for Mel Brooks' heavy-handed and obvious vulgarity, but I'm obliged to give it five, for Madeline Kahn's performance as Lili von Shtupp. Specifically, her rendering of "I'm Tired", a perfect send-up of Marlene Detrich. (One would like to think that Ms. Dietrich fell into convulsive laughter after seeing it.) Brooks says he wrote the song before Kahn was cast, but she sings it as if it were written for her unique talent.
Is it a true classic? As with "Young Frankenstein", I don't know. But it is funny, mostly because of its blunt treatment of racism. In this regard, it's a much more honest film than "Crash".
The cinematography by Joseph Biroc does little to enhance his excellent reputation. The daylight scenes are flat, almost washed-out. The night scenes, though, are richly colored and jsut plain beautiful. "Blazing Saddles" is one of only two of Brooks films shot in Panavision, and it generally doesn't work. Too many scenes look overly "distant", when a tighter view of the characters would have been more effective.
Amazon's attractive price makes the BD a must-have, if only to see Madeline Kahn in a classic performance.
Movie Review: Super Excellent Blu-Ray..."N" word Alert!!!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Wow...I've seen it so many times on regular TV, I forgot about the many, many times the "N" word is used. Just letting you know if that kind of thing bothers you. To be fair...I did hear cracker once or twice.
But if you get it, like most people do, then buy this if you ever liked the movie at all. The picture and sound is excellent.
I love it when you find a Special Feature that is good, it's like finding a gem. Check out the pilot for Black Bart in the special features. It's a mid-70's attempt to put the character on a sitcom during primetime. Lou Gosset Jr. plays Bart. They continue the "N" word tradition that's for sure. But, for some reason it seems more unacceptable...watch it and you will see why, well, watch it and imagine it's on during primetime in 1975 and you will see why. But, it is quite entertaining and a good find.
BUY THIS.
Movie Review: Love this Movie and one of my first blu-ray movies Summary: 5 Stars
I love this movie from Mel Brooks it's one of his best!
Also this was one of the first blu-ray movies I bought for my Playstation 3, I have experienced watching this movie in so many different ways, first I watched it on my SDTV looked great, then latter on I boutght my first LCD HDTV and watched the movie again. The Blu-ray and HDTV brought out so many things that SDTV would not such as a sharper color and super nice resolution of 1080 i, their were time's the colors were off but I'm guessing it's the age of the movie. The last big improvement was the addition of 5.1 Surround Sound system I bought, It gave the movie a more life like fell.
Movie Review: Mel Brooks At His Best! Great in Blu-Ray!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Mel Brooks does it perfectly in this send up of western films! Not sure I need to add too much to that, if you have never seen this film, you need to! It is a comedy classic. As to the transfer to Blu-Ray, it is a decent one. Okay, this is an older film, so it isn't one of the best Blu-Ray titles to be sure, but it looks as good as I have ever seen it look here in Blu-Ray High Def!
No older film is going to look perfect in high def, and flaws are to be expected, but this is still a nice transfer overall. Looks so much better than the standard DVD, and holds up well to the HD version.
